P90x: Personal Training in a DVD

AbsSo, I’ve obviously been bitten by the fitness bug for a couple of months now. My goal is to compete in a Figure contest. In the beginning, as I’d gotten a little leaner and added some muscle, I started hearing about P90x from my friend Coach Jenn. She thought it might help me achieve my goal. So, Beach Body was kind enough to send me the P90x system to try out and I decided I would post results at 30, 60 and 90 days.

Here are my thoughts from the first 30 days – and pictures too – and you can decide whether P90x will rock your fitness world. First off, to the left is a picture of me right now. I was trying to show off the abs I am getting. Abs start showing on me quickly with training, but P90x has given them depth.

Now, these pictures below are me Pre-P90X at 8 weeks and 6 weeks.

I am around 12 weeks into training now… around 30 days with P90x. I am still trying to build muscle and shape. My back is actually looking really great, as are my shoulders.

I definitely see my obliques coming out more and the sweeps in my leg are noticeable, according to my husband.

Now that I talked 30-day results, let’s talk diet. Well – that is almost a dirty word. It’s better to call it a Nutrition Plan. I love it. It kind of opened my eyes to my options. I was already on a high protein, low card diet of sorts but it was getting a little boring. But they provide an itemized list of what you can eat from different food groups; fat, carbs, protein, etc. And there are also three phases as you go through the program. The nutritional phases will help you strengthen muscle and shred fat, without compromising your energy or peak performance. So the first part of the nutrition plan (phase 1) lasts approximately 30 days, depending on how you feel. This is the Fat Shredder phase, which is also the one that looks most similar to my figure diet. And not only do they provide me a list of what I can eat, they also supply a menu and some recipes! It just rocks.

Now let’s talk workouts. First – since these are intended to do at home, you have to keep in mind your audience.

“Audience?” you question.

Yes – audience. You see, I tried doing a few of these workouts (12 different muscle groups) at home … and I realized I have to do it after they go to bed for the most part. That’s because my audience is made up of a 3 year old and 20 month old – and they like to jump on my downward dog – turning it into a lame dog. Or they ride under my legs with a Fropper as I am in Warrior One. By the way, those are yoga poses found in Yoga X. Since the yoga part is 1 hour, 30 minutes, I have the most difficulty doing this one. The positions rock, though! I can totally see how it would increase muscle tone and flexibility. It’s just hard to do at home.

Now, let’s talk where I had major success. The Ab Ripper X. Oh-My-God. This is one of my favorite work-outs from the guide. It is only about 30 minutes and they are similar to some of the exercises I did by myself at the gym. It combines balance to work-out your core and definitely strength as you tighten those ab muscles to do various poses. My husband will even do this workout with me, making it more fun!

Pylometrics … I didn’t even know what that was until P90X! It turns it is a jump routine that helps you run and jump faster. They say this is the X in P90X. Eek! Sounds exciting, yah? Well, it’s an hour long routine and you are breathing heavy in the first few minutes. But I have to say it’s one of the easier routines to do with the kids. I think the lunges and squats caught their attention and they would actually try to do it with me. I was proud to set a great example for them at home, since usually I do most of my work-outs at the gym. Most of the individual “sets” are only seconds long, so no matter how hard it may seem … you can do anything for 30 seconds, right?

Another routine that I found to be a great workout was the Cardio X. I am betting most women can do this at home, especially if you’ve done a cardio class at a gym. They show how you can modify moves, but it’s pretty quick paced and fun! Plus there are probably moves you haven’t seen before like Swing Kicks, Jump Shots and Tires.

Remember, P90X is a complete body workout, also targeting and providing a work out for:

  • Chest & Back
  • X Stretch
  • Shoulders & Arms
  • Legs & Back
  • Kenpo X
  • Core Synergetics
  • Chest, Shoulders, Triceps
  • Back & Biceps

I’ve been using P90x for 30 days. I think I was on a pretty good path pre-P90x, but I wanted something to push me a little more. So here is my before P90x and P90x photo – 30 days in. Since this is a 90 day process, I will talk about the other workouts in the next two months. In the meantime, who wants to be on this journey with me?

This would be perfect for my husband, son, & I to do together! I need to lose a few pounds and so does my husband. My son just needs to build some muscle for all the sports that he is involved in.
