Restore Clean Water System

restoreRecently the Mom Buzz had the opportunity to try a new water purification pitcher called Restore by HoMedics. HoMedics makes products like massage chairs, footbaths, pillows, allergen protectors, bath scales, etc – the name is familiar.

I have had experience with water purification pitchers before, but I am always open to trying something new – especially when there are great benefits. In this case, Restore claims to remove 99.9999% of Bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.95% of Microbial Cysts from water using Germ Killing UV Clean Technology. I just think it’s amazing that they don’t say over 99% – but they go as far as the “.9999″ to make the point. The purification system also removes heavy metals (mercury, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead), chlorine and some industrial and agricultural pollutants (benzene, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, lindane), so your water will actually TASTE CLEAN. (And it’s BPA free, just in case you’re wondering…)

One thing about these water purification system is that they can save you  money. Rather than buying bottled water, you just buy a stainless steel reusable bottle (like from Earthlust) and refill it with this purified water. I am not a big water drinker, I have to fool myself. So I used the water from the Restore Pitcher and combined it with Wyler’s Light Soft Drink Mix. It tasted good! I already drink filtered water … I even use filtered water in my Keurig … so it’s hard to say it tastes better than other filtered water. But I can say it tastes 100% better than tap water. YUCK! I can’t even drink water from a drinking fountain, it is so foul and the amount of germs there is almost immeasurable. That’s whay you HAVE to bring your own filtered water places, so you don’t resort to using tainted fountain water!

So yes, you can use this filtered water for everyday drinking, mixing with soft drink mixes, for baby bottles, coffee – even your dog!

How does the Restore Clean Water System work? Well, it has a filter. The system will alert you to when you need to change your filter, plus it lets you customize your water consumption level.

You can see how it works with this video:

Now, one thing that really got me about the Restore Clean Water System is that they have a great point – just because water is “filtered” doesn’t mean it is purified. Just like my Oreck Vacuum has a UV light to kill germs, viruses and bugs that other vacuums just glide over – Restore is going beyond filtering by removing bacteria, viruses and more using UV technology. UV Technology has been used for over 60 years for its germicidal properties in hospitals and laboratories. And now for the first time, an application of this unique germ-killing technology is available for home use in an easy to use water pitcher.

How easy is it to use? First you remove the Filter from it’s package and soak in water. )You can get replacement filters at www.homoedics.com/restore). There are instructions to follow when you FIRST use your pitcher – but I am going to tell you about the day-to-day use. You want to fill your pitcher, so you choose “fill” on the handle – there is a switch. You fill the reservoir with at most four cups – the pitcher holds 8. You place the lid on and make sure the spout is closed. You then have to use a cable to plug the system in. Slide the valve now to PURIFY so that unpurified water does not contact purified water. Press PURIFY on the adapter and the UV light will clean your water. I was wondering how long it would take, but it’s pretty quick at one minute. When the light turns off, remove the cord and drink your water! Totally easy to use!

The pitcher is oval. It wont fit in my door of my fridge. It is attractive with a frosted, blue color with white accents.

Overall I like it. My one wish is that there was a way to purify the water without the extendable cord, like if it was built in. But I think it’s super cool that it cleans the water so thoroughly and this would make a great gift for a family member, friend … or yourself!
