Holiday Guide: Dino-Roars Monty Rex Dino

trex1Do you remember Kota last year? It was this interactive baby Triceratops that was the size of a pony? My mom was SO CLOSE to purchasing it for my kids last year, until she realized that there was no room for Kota in my house… as cool as she was. Well, my house hasn’t gotten any bigger, but there is room for Kota’s friends this year. That’s because they have gotten smaller, although they are still full of dino-attitude!

MONTY REX

One of the coolest Dino-Roars toys is Monty Rex Dino. He stands over 15 inches tall, moves his head, tail and arms and he walks! Don’t be fooled by imitations! When walking through Toys R Us I saw other dinosaurs, but none interacted with their new owner as much as Monty Rex. He responds to touch, will roar when spoken to and dances to the four songs that are “included” in his system.

I will say that not too much scares my kids. We own a a remote-control Imaginext dinosaur that is about the same size as Monty Rex. I am sure you’ve seen this toy at TRU or Target in a display case. Last year it was green – this year red. Well, I always see kids SCARED when their parents push the button … but my kids just want to push it over and over and over again. Well, it’s the same with Rex. He is suggested for ages 3 and up. If your kid loves dinosaurs, interactive toys, things that make noises, things that are loud – they will LOVE MONTY REX! If your child is timid, don’t despair – their is still a Dino-Roar for them! More on that later…

trex2Monty Rex comes up to about my knee. He is FULL of personality. The kids loved him at the store, as my youngest kept pulling one Monty Rex after another off the lower shelf. (Smart marketing, eh? He was on the bottom shelf where little kids could easily find him at Toys R Us!) And at home, it’s no different! Monty Rex stomps around, roars, wiggles his tail and we all find him hilarious and entertaining. Both boys (3 and 2) play with him, but my youngest REALLY has a thing for dinosaurs and is getting the most enjoyment out of it.

Monty Rex is a reddish brindle color. His skin is soft to the touch, made of a very thin material. His feet, teeth and inner mouth are all a hard plastic. His arms are a softer, plastic material. His battery pack is located under …uhm…okay I need to learn dinosaur anatomy. Let’s see … his battery pack is located between his legs. Haha! When you open him, be sure to change him from “Try Me” to “On”.

stompersSTOMPERS

If you want something smaller, but just as cool, look for the new Stompers. They also walk and have lifelike sounds. Right now I only see the Triceratops at HasbroToyShop.com, but I’ve seen a commercial that has another type of dinosaur stomper too (an anklysaurus). Check out this Stompers Commercial to see what I am buzzing about. To make these Stompers come to life you simply push a button on its back. The Triceratops will throw back its head as it marches, while the anklysaurus will swing its tail as it marches. They retail for only $24, making them an affordable, yet special gift. I haven’t seen these at Target yet, I think I saw them at Toys R Us. And the Triceratops Stomper is available at HasbroToyShop.com right now.
HATCHLINGS

hardrasosAnd I am sure by now most of you are aware of the Dino-Roars. These retail for $14.99 – $16.99. These are newborn dinosaurs and include a pterodactyl, brontosaurus, hadrasaur, stegosaurus, t-rex and triceratops. They respond to touch and make prehistoric, dinosaur sounds. If you are buying for a lot of little ones, these are super adorable and there are plenty to choose from. They are suggested for ages 3 and up. I think if you can, choose the Stompers. For $8 – $10 extra dollars I think you end up with a much cooler toy that can maintain a toddler or preschoolers attention for longer.

Here is Monty Rex and some Dino-Roars in action:
