The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story

Snowman3dCoverEvery year Santa brings my kids a few books a little early, to help get them in the spirit of Christmas and reading. And of course, they get even more on Christmas Day. If you are looking for a wonderful Christmas story to add to your child’s library, be on the lookout for The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story.

The Snowman’s Song is about a little snowman who wants to sing. But snowmen don’t sing, they simply send their thoughts to one another through pure ice and frost drops. But this little snowman told his mom through his thoughts that he wanted to sing, rejoice and go caroling. So the little snowman was sad.

One day he met a beautiful cardinal. She told him that he can do anything if he believed hard enough. So the snowman tried to brave, that one day he can sing too. But day after day, he still couldn’t sing.

One day a little girl found him. She played with him, giving him a scarf and sharing songs and riddles. When it was time to go, she gave him a warm kiss that melted “holes” into his cheeks. Don’t worry, they were small, like a string of pearls. Then on Christmas Eve, she returned with a gift! It was a necklace with stars, snowflakes and silver bells. When she gave it to him, he felt a lot happier, forgetting that he can’t sing.

Overall, I thought this story by Marilee Joy Mayfield was incredibly sweet, illustrating how our children are capable of reaching their goals, as long as they believe in themselves. I loved the rhyming verse, making the story musical even as you read. The illustrations by Tracy La Rue Hohn are OUTSTANDING. They are full color and depict the emotions of the snowman so well. Tracy is incedibly talented, as she uses graphic programs to achieve the look of water color for these illustrations. It’s definitely a wonderful addition to a child’s library. My own children have a special place in their hearts for snowmen, possibly because we don’t see them in “real life” in the South. So they can’t get enough of The Snowman’s Song – a great Christmas story!

The Snowman’s Song costs between $16.95 and $19.99 and includes an audio storytime CD. It is 44 pages long, perfect for preschoolers. It is published by Leaping Antelope Productions. You can find more information at www.snowmanssong.com.
