My kids are PICKY eaters. That’s normal. I was picky when I was little. (I still am.) But I hate to use some of the tactics parents used in the past, like re-eating your dinner for breakfast or having to wait at the table until it’s all gone. Most of my Mom’s Club friends try to take the pressure and fight out of eating. Here are some tips we all use:
LET THEM GRAZE: First off, you need to know that for the most part your child will not starve themselves. I know, it’s scary when you watch them and it just seems like they are not eating. But the best thing to do is let picky eaters graze, as opposed to eating three meals and one snack. I will serve my kids breakfast, plus leave healthy snack options out for them all day. They may not sit down and eat breakfast, but they will graze on apple sauce, cereal, fruit and other snacks throughout the day.
DON’T FORCE THEM TO EAT: Keeping them at the table to eat can cause a battle of wills if they really don’t want to eat. I sit the boys at the table, if they decide not to eat I let them down. They usually end up coming back on their own within the hour to munch on their entrees.
SERVE A HEALTHY HELPING: I know it’s tempting not to “waste food” by putting a lot on their plate. But just like an adult is more apt to eat more, the more food is on their plate, the same goes with kids. I’ll serve them a lot of broccoli and carrots in bowls and even I am surprised to see it gone if I turn my back.
MAKE IT FUN: You can make it eating fun by serving food in fun ways. For example, you can use Muffin Tins at lunch to serve healthy finger foods. Or check out the the Construction Cutlery from FlyingPeas.com. This dinner set comes with a bulldozer pusher, fork lift fork, and front loader spoon. These “tools” have textured, easy grip handles and detailing that allows little hands to hold on tight. Each is rugged and light weight, plus dishwasher safe. Materials are FDA approved, NO PAINTS and NO LEAD are used in this product. They are Bisphenol A (BPA) Free. Dimensions of the fork and the spoon are 5 3/4 inches long by one inch wide. The pusher is 4 1/4 inches long and one inch wide.
We received the Construction Cutlery set from Flying Peas to try out, and it has become one of our favorite utensils for the kids. My boys love using them to eat their meals! I still think they are picky eaters, but it has made eating more enjoyable overall as they use these utensils to spoon soup in their mouth or push their carrots into a pile. You can get the basic yellow or PINK for girls.
It makes a great stocking stuffer!
