Norman Phartephant, Volume 1

Six months ago, I received Norman the PhartEphant … who is simply a Plush Elephant that farts. At first I was hesitant, but my three year old son, 2 year old son and 30 year old husband all loved Norman IMMEDIATELY. My husband even clepto’d him and Norman now lives in an office. And you know what … I miss him.

I actually miss Norman. The purpose behind Norman PhatEphant was to give an education to the owner’s son, as well as give to charities. Now, even though Norman is no longer in my house, I can still see what he is up to in his new book – Norman Phartephant, Volume 1. In this story, written by Angela Larson and illustrated by Kenny Durkin, Norman is an African Elephant who goes to live with another elephant at a zoo. The new diet is upsetting to Norman’s sensitive belly, so he toots a lot. Long, short, stinky, silent – he  never knows what’s going to happen and he get’s quite upset. One day as he is sitting in his pen he spies a beautiful tiger. The tiger isn’t keen on Norman at first … until he lets one loose! The tiger is amazed by the loud fart, and a friendship ensues. Both Norman and the Tiger learn about each other, how they are alike and how they are different.

My kids love the story. (I am sure they would love it even more if we got Norman back from the husband, so the plush would complement the story.) The images are bright and cheerful. The kids easily recognize Norman and the other illustrations. And the story definitely leaves off with the idea that we’ll be learning about new animal friends in ensuing volumes! The story is 32 pages, printed with soy base ink on recycled paper and if purchased with Norman it will come with a zippered bag. The book is $9.95. Norman is $24.95.
