Tee Shirt Quilts Preserve Memories

If you’re like most moms, you have a pile of treasured clothing you just can’t bear to throw away.  Or maybe you’ve been collecting t-shirts over the years from sporting events, campus activities, or concerts. But what to do with all of those tees and clothes, stuffed away in drawers as dusty memories. Well, Campus Quilt offers a unique alternative by turning your old clothes into lasting memories in the form of fun and functional custom quilts. The process is easy with many styling and sizing options available so you can customize your quilt exactly how you want it. You choose the layout of your quilt, select the backing color, and add extra services like embroidery, photo squares, or sashing.  The quilts are fully quilted to ensure durability, so you can cuddle up in your quilt, hang it on the wall, or save as a keepsake.

Getting started is easy. Just place your order online or by phone and you will receive a quilt kit with order form, layout guide, fabric swatch card, bag to mail the clothing, and a pre-paid UPS mailing label.  Send your clothing back and in 2-3 weeks (not counting holiday season), you will receive your finished quilt.  You might be anxious about putting your valuable memories in the mail or recreating them into a quilt, I know the Mom Buzz reviewer was. But she was SO PLEASED at the outcome, that I can say it is definitely worth it!

On my end, I felt comforted with the e-mail updates that I was receiving from the Campus Quilt customer service team. They let me know when the quilt kit was in the mail, the arrival of shirts, when the quilt was in production and when the quilt shipped back. If there was a problem in any of the details along the way, I could have sent them an e-mail requesting clarification. Plus, I was provided with tracking numbers so I could keep on top of the shirts and quilt in transit. But no worries, this all went smoothly!

Now, even though I had baby clothes – mine were just not quilt worthy after being worn by 2 – 3 kids. But I do have a friend who is an avid concert goer, and I thought she probably had a lot of concert tees squirreled away. I was right! She agreed to have her tees made into a quilt to try out this process! Remember, though, Campus Quilt can use t-shirts, sweatshirts, baby-outifits, or any other memorable fabric to make your quilt.  They also make photo memory quilts. Here are the pictures of the final “Concert Quilt” and the reviewer’s notes.

Concert Quilt

I received the twin size (24 squares–4′ x 6′), but when I measured the quilt it actually seemed to be bigger  – which is great. It measured 89″ x 58″ (or 7.4′ x 4.8′).  Amazingly, it only took 5 weeks to receive my quilt, even during the holiday rush.

I used concert t-shirts for my quilt.  I chose 12 t-shirts and used the front and back of each shirt, which equaled the 24 squares.  Each square was 15″ x 15″ so some of the designs on the shirts weren’t going to fit in that box. I included detailed “special instructions” to ensure my memories were preserved the way I wanted. I took a photo of each t-shirt, printed the photos, and used a Sharpie to mark on the photos exactly what part of the design I wanted in the quilt.  I was very pleased when I received my quilt.  All my special instructions were followed exactly.  And the quilt is so professionaly made down to the last detail.  It’s so nice to have all my favorite t-shirts “on display” rather than stuck in a drawer.  I may put the quilt on a bed or use it as a wall hanging.  And there are so many options for quilt sizes.  The twin fit my needs because I had just enough to fill the 24 squares. Overall, it was a great experience!

Jen makes the process sound amazing! And you can see a picture of her quilt to the right! I love it, too! She is right, it’s perfect to put on the bed or as a wall-hanging. At least now everyone can really appreciate it!

Wow that is hard to decide which size, (due to my limited budget) but I would likely try to get the full size and maybe have a photo square in the center if I could find one I really like. The tees I have are all from one of my sons races, mostly never worn. He wanted to keep them though and Mom gets to hang on to them while he & family move all over the world, courtesy of the U.S. Navy! A quilt would be perfect for him.

I would preserve my Navy son’s race tees. He has many of these shirts he left with me as he & family got shipped to Japan. He wants the memories of the races, but too many shirts to wear! I would absolutely love to present him with a quilt made of his race shirts, he would be thrilled!
