Getting Kids to Eat Vegetables

Getting kids to eat their veggies can be tough. Maybe it was super easy when they were first eating baby food, trying purees from a jar. Then as they moved to solids, they constantly were picking things off your plate. But all the sudden – BOOM – they are on a veggie strike. So you try different ways of getting your kids to get back to their veggie roots.

1. You introduce the foods over and over. Repetition is key – the more they see it, the more they are willing to eventually try it.

2. Give them choices. Put Broccoli and Carrots on their plate, rather than just one. The different colors and the option to choose might get them to try something.

3. Get some help from them in the kitchen. If they help prepare the salad, they might take a bite of it too!

4. Make it fun!If you serve their veggies on a fun plate or in a fun way, they may be more likely to eat it. I try making funny noises as I eat veggies or pretend I am a dinosaur or rabbit.

5. Let’s get sneaky. Add some pureed veggies to their eggs, pasta, meatballs … anything they would normally eat.

6. Try Veggie Patch Bites. They look like Chicken Nuggets, but are actually little breaded morsels of farm fresh vegetables combined with real cheese. They come in a variety of great flavors including broccoli, spinach, sweet corn and portabella. They are made of all natural products, 100% vegetarian, cholesterol free, no MSG, good source of iron, protein, fiber, calcium and vitamin A with no artificial preservatives or trans fats. You can feel good about serving them as a snack or as part of a meal.

I tried the Sweet Corn and Broccoli Bites at my house. I baked them per the instructions and they came out golden brown. The cheese isn’t oozing out, but stays in place with the vegetables within the bread crumbs. They do look a lot like chicken nuggets, but they taste good when freshly baked. My boys enjoyed trying both types of Veggie Patch Bites, each eating 2 out of the 5 I gave them. That’s normal for them, though, since they are grazers. And I could feel good knowing they had broccoli and corn in their belly!

Dinosaur World

I checked out the Veggie Patch site and I’m interested to see that they have Veggie Patch Hot Dogs and Sausages! I am going to have to look for that at my local store. It’s great knowing there are non-stressful ways to get my kids to eat their veggies from now on! Although, it’s still fun to make dinosaur noises when eating. Chomp, Chomp, Roar!
