Chocolate Milk Does the Body Good! (WIN CHOCOLATE MILK!)

My kids are HUGE milk drinkers. Chocolate milk is a special treat for them and me, though. But I was just introduced to Organic lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 from Horizon Dairy, which makes it an even healthier treat! That’s because DHA Omega-3 is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health. And we already know the calcium in milk is important for growing bones!

The Importance of DHA

DHA belongs to a category of healthy fatty acids known as Omega-3′s. Found in high concentrations in the tissues of the brain and eye, DHA Omega-3 is thought to help support healthy function in these areas. DHA has also been shown to help support heart health. DHA provides a nutritional boost for children’s growing minds and bodies, as their brain nearly quadruples during those first five years of life. And even though DHA is a key structural component of the brain, many young children don’t get their recommended daily amount of DHA as it is found in a limited number of food sources.

About Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk Plus DHA Omega-3:

Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 is fortified with a natural, 100 percent vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA – a safe, wholesome, delicious way to bring more of this important nutrient into your family’s diet. And even though chocolate milk sounds like an indulgent treat, it actually provides the same nine essential nutrients as unflavored milk (calcium, potassium, phosphorous, protein, vitamins A, D, B12, Riboflavin and niacin), and can help kids meet their calcium requirements. In fact, it turns out flavored milk consumers do not have higher total fat or calorie intakes than non milk consumers! Plus, most kids love the taste of flavored  milk. FITNESS FREAKS

And yes, even huge fitness buffs like me can enjoy chocolate milk. I read recently in Muscle & Fitness Hers that a 2006 study showed that low fat milk was as effective at post-exercise rehydration as sports drinks! That’s because  of the natural carb:pro ratio in flavored milks, low fat chocolate milk is an effective post-exercise recovery beverage. The appropriate carb:pro ratio for improving endurance performance is about 4:1 However, effective ranges can vary from 2:1 and up to 5:1. And consuming carbohydrate and protein post workout has been shown to enhance muscle glycogen formation, promote a hormonal environment that encourages muscle growth, promote muscle protein production and may lessen immune-suppressive effects due of intense exercise!

MY OPINION:

I bought a 1/2 gallon of Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 to try with my boys. My sons immediately took to it! It was thick and creamy, almost making it hard to believe it was lowfat! And it tasted like… chocolate. My boys have  been asking for it repeatedly so I know it was a huge success. I used the store locator and found out that the milk was available at my local supermarket, as well as Target! I ended up purchasing it with a supplied coupon at Target.
