Powerful Handheld Vacuum: Dyson DC31

Okay, so let’s say you already own the uber-cool vacuum with lots of power and suction. It cleans up all the big messes and dirty corners during your daily/weekly cleaning. But what about those spills that don’t require lugging out the big machine? That’s when handheld vacuums are super convenient. Since owning my own home, I’ve only had the pleasure of using two different brands of handheld vacuums. In my opinion, the Dyson DC31 has incredible suction that makes cleaning little messes a whole lot easier.

First off, I love how so many people loved the look of the DC23 Turbinehead when I reviewed it. I always thought power was more important than looks, but to many people it’s high up there on the “must-haves” of their next vacuum. So, let me tell you that in the “looks” department, the DC31 Hadnheld is “mom’s” power tool. Not to say that only mom’s vacuum, but face it – we are the one’s who make most of the household buying decisions. And if a handheld vacuum looks cool, maybe dad/husband/son/daughter won’t mind using it, as well. I know my 2 and 3 year old were having a BLAST vacuuming up their spilled cocoa pebbles, with my help.

The DC31 has a handle, much like a power drill, but comfortable and lightweight when in use. It is a deep gray color with orange metallic accents. The debris compartment is clear, so you can see what you vacuumed. It comes with two interchangeable tools; a debris tool that converts into a brush tool and a crevice tool is also included. But with the debris tool, I love how you can just move the brush forward and it pops into place, that way you don’t lose or misplace a third tool.

Now, let’s talk power. For a 2.9 pound handheld, this thing is amazing. It uses root cyclone technology, so you don’t lose suction as you clean. That’s the one thing that kills me about my “other” handheld, power does not remain constant. The DC31 gives you 10 minutes of high, constant suction or 6 minutes of even HIGHER suction (70% higher) with just a touch of a button on the back.

So the pros: 2.9 pounds, cool design, easy to handle and amazing power.

Cons? Only if you lose that extra handy crevice tool! Oh … and the fact you have to plug it in to charge. Can we ever move away from that though? I wish it had a little brain that would make it walk over to the outlet and charge itself. Otherwise, it’s just a superb little vacuum!

You can purchase the DC31 at Dyson for $219.99.  Includes free shipping and a 2 year warranty. Dyson also manufactures the DC31 Animal Handheld for $269.99, which has a motorized brush bar.

This actually looks really neat! Our hand vacuum wasn’t very powerful, and died more than six months ago. May look into this. …it is a bit pricey, though.

  11. I want this! I love the way it can get into corners and crevices. It’d would also be great to vacuum up crumbs in the kick space under the kitchen cabinets. Makes the handheld vacuum I have look pathetic!
