Yesterday I buzzed about the Reading Tour with Laura Numeroff, an author probably best known for her book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. She is doing book readings today and tomorrow for her new book The JellyBeans and the Big Book Bonanza.
Laura has partnered with Sleepy’s and First Book, a non-profit organization working to provide new books to children in need, to promote family bedtime reading. Research shows that reading at least 20 minutes per night with your child can improve child literacy by 10 whole school days per year. You can make a pledge to read to your children at least 20 minutes per night. Each pledge will support Sleepy’s corporate contribution to First Book to provide new books to families in need so more children have access to read. Take the pledge at http://www.sleepysbedtimestories.com and enter for a chance to win lunch with Laura Numeroff in New York City.
About The JellyBeans and the Big Book Bonanaza:
As a fan of Laura Numeroff, owning 4 of her books, I was excited to learn about The Jellybeans and the Big Book Bonanza. The story is about a quiet rabbit, Anna, who loves to read. Her best friends are different in that they prefer to dance, paint or play soccer. But, they all get along. They are like jellybeans, all different but great together.
At school they have to write a book report about something they love. With Anna and the librarian’s help, the other three girls find books about the subjects they love – dancing, art and soccer. But what should Anna write about, if her favorite thing is reading? Well, the librarian has that figured out too, and gives Anna a book full of fairytales.
On the day of the big report, each student reads their paper out loud. Anna is shy, though. But with the support of her friends she remembers how exciting it is to read and imagine and she helps inspire the other students, as well! And in the end, Anna and her friend celebrate with a round of Jellybeans!
The illustrations by Lynn Munsinger are bright and colorful. They accompany the story perfectly. I love how they show Anna so into reading as she jump ropes while holding a book and takes bubble baths holding a book. She reminds me of a younger Mom Buzz! The illustrations were done with watercolor.
The hardcover book has a reinforced binding, great for little hands. It costs $15.95. It was published in 2010 (brand new!) by Abrams Books for Young Readers. It is 32 pages long.
Already I have read it to my youngest son and he loved it. I think if you are looking to add a book to an Easter Basket, this is a great one for children ages 4 to 8.
