I absolutely love having a bedtime routine for my boys. A huge part of the routine is reading three books per child every night. The last few nights my littlest one has been enjoying a few Sandra Boynton books and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. My oldest and I have been reading a chapter per night from How to Train Your Dragon, The Jellybeans and the Big Book Bonanza and Time for Bed, Baby Ted.
Time for Bed, Baby Ted is perfect for my oldest since he loves to delay bedtime as much as possible. He starts by telling me it’s his youngest brother’s turn for bed. Then he starts requesting snacks and water. Once he’s in bed he remembers toys he needs from outside his room and more.
Baby Ted is similar in this story. Except here Baby Ted’s dad has just finished reading his last book and is going to tuck him in when Baby Ted plays a guessing game with his dad. While Ted quacks, waddles, hangs and pokes, his dad has to guess what animal Ted is pretending to be. But with every game of pretend, Ted is actually going through the motions of getting closer and closer to bed as he uses the potty, brushes his “fangs” and pokes under the covers.
The story is sing-song with repetition, which is great for prereaders. My boys love the illustrations of the animals, the sounds and the movements they make, they really bring the story to life. Plus, the story is so win-win with everything kids love to read about and see – animals and children! The illustrations of Ted, his dad and the animals are cute and colorful. They were done by Kay Chorao.
