Castle Cake Kit by Wilton #win

My niece wanted an Ariel Castle Cake for her birthday. I did a lot of research online on how to make one, but decided to go straight to the pros for the final idea – Wilton. Sure enough, Wilton actually sells a Castle Cake Kit (aka Romantic Castle Cake Set), which has the turrets, peaks, main roof, windows and doors to help complete what would otherwise be a very tricky cake. There are no cake pans, which from reading forums I realized some people may have thought. This is just a HUGE accessory kit.

There are detailed directions included with the kit on how ti make the icing and decorate the cake. What you can make with the kit is just amazing, from a typical Princess Castle Cake that any girl is sure to love to an illuminated Gingerbread Castle for the holidays or a Sand Castle to a Fairytale Birthday Cake.

To make Ariel’s underwater castle I bought3 cans of Wilton Color Mist Food Color Spray in purple, green and blue to add dimension to the cake. I also purchased a Sea Creatures Candy Mold, because I wanted to make pink starfish to add to the cake. Of course I needed Pink Candy Melts to do that! I bought an Ariel Candle and some Ariel Icing Decorations to add as a final touch. I had large crystal sugar. Oh, and I dyed the icing for the cake Sky Blue.

I actually baked four cakes to do this – two for the top tier and two for the bottom. I cut the top tiers to size, iced and stacked. I iced the turrets and added the crystal sugar for sparkle. I used 3 Large, 3 Medium and 3 Small Turret Towers and their peaks. I used 4 of the 6 windows and the door. I added pink edging around the outside of the cake.

As a first attempt, the cake came out decent. Normally I make a practice cake to get an understanding of the process and then a final cake, but I didn’t have the time to do it this time around. The cake ends up VERY HEAVY and I think a pound cake would have been better than a soft, fluffy cake to handle the turrets, towers and main roof. But my niece was thrilled, as was my sister.

I am planning on making a Haunted House with this kit next, for my youngest son who loves Scooby Doo. I love how the pieces are reusable and they washed GREAT (all icing and cake crumbs gone) in the dishwasher wish some Cascade. I have to add that part, because I don’t think any other agent would have gotten them that clean, they were like new again.

The Romantic Castle Kit is available from, as well as other Wilton retailers. It retails for $20.99.
