VeggieTales: Sweetpea Beauty #win

I absolutely ADORE VeggieTales. I just started watching them back in February 2009 with my sons. The first one we ever saw was Abe and the Amazing Promise. Since then we’ve seen Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Noah’s Umbrella, St. Nicholas – A Story of Joyful Giving and Pistachio – the Little Boy that Woodn’t. I love Veggie Tales movies because there is no fault with them. They are stories that the kids can relate to, often taking inspiration from the “Big Screen” or classic stories, like Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones or Pinnochio.

One thing I never realized, being a mom of boys, is that a lot of the Veggie Tales do lean towards “boys-themes” to teach about bible stories. Until now. VeggieTales JUST released Sweatpea Beauty – a Girl After God’s Own Heart. This DVD has two stories that relate to girls, although my sons absolutely love it too.The stories include SweetPea Beauty, Snoodlerella and one funny song about pants.

SweetPea Beauty is about a kingdom where being the fairest is most important. The queen is so into looks, that she forgets real beauty comes from the inside. Some bad advice from a mirror leads her to first banish and then try to put SweetPea beauty to sleep forever. But through luck, good friends and an understanding that true beauty comes from the heart, of course the princess is okay, gets her prince and teaches the queen a valuable lesson.

In Snoodlerella, the little stepdaughter just isn’t as pretty (or so she thinks) as her older stepsisters. Braces, glasses and “cumbersome graces” leave her feeling bad about herself. She gets a makeover from her fairy godmother, but of course at midnight she turns back to herself. But the king sees her at the party, dances with her, reminds her that he made her the way she is and loves everything about her. So in short, since God made us, we must all be beautiful.

The stories are a great message for young girls… and boys too. They learn that everyone is beautiful on the outside since God made us. And that true beauty is beauty of the heart, being kind and caring of others.
