Teaching your Child to Read #win

My son is four and about to start school. Sure, “just” Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten – but it’s the start of learning, improving and building upon skills like reading. Learning to read starts at home, but shockingly 40% of children, across all socio-economic backgrounds, are failing to master reading, which is essential to school success.

Over the past two years, I have found that online and electronic learning tools can help children learn new skills. If you want your child to get a head start with reading, to complement their current reading curriculum in a fun way and/or help your child catch up to his peers in the classroom, you might want to consider the online reading program at ReadingKingdom.com.

Now, my four year old is bright, and I would say he is on par with his age group in regards to his current reading skills. He recognizes some words based on sight – like Batman. And he can recognize his own name. He can also read books to his little brother, although I am sure some is by memory. And he tries to sound out words using letter recognition. But of course, I realize that in just 3 short years he is going to be expected to read chapter books. That is a huge leap! So I am excited to start the Reading Kingdom program with him. I’ll be providing feedback on how we have progressed in December.

The Reading Kingdom was developed by Dr. Marion Blank. She has spent over 40 years studying how children learn to read and is recognized as a top expert in literacy. Her program focuses on sequencing, motor skills, sounds, meaning, grammar and comprehension. Lots of other programs focus only on sounding out letters, which is not always accurate… and very tedious. Ever sound out a word with your child and realize each individual sound doesn’t really make the word in the end?

The Reading Kingdom is also unique in that it is customized for your child. Each interaction with the program allows the computer to avoid asking questions that are too easy or too hard. Instead it is “just right” to help your child learn at their level and pace, moving forward.  For example, the program will skip over words they already can read and write and offer tutoring for areas that need improvement.

Here is one powerful testimonial from a parent – Cindy Crawford:

So the big question is – how much is this program. You can get a month subscription for $19.99 a month. Each additional child is $9.99. Remember, it is unique to the child playing/reading, so you can’t have two children share the same program. But it’s 1/2 off the subscription for that second child, which rocks. You also get a discount for purchasing the reading program for a year in advance.

WINTMBOne winner will win a one year subscription to ReadingKingdom.com

As children move through this program, the path they take is customized to their particular needs based on their previous interactions is a good thing

I am homepreschooling my 4yo daughter. I enjoy learning about new resources on how to teach her better. This program appears to be better then the generic programs as it customizes itself to my child. I would be thrilled to give my daughter that extra boost before she gets to kindergarten.

I would like this because it focuses on many of the important skills needed for reading. Nothing can take the place of a parent/teacher working with the child, but this looks like it would be a great tool to use in the process!

I would like this to supplement my kindergartener’s reading program at school. He enjoys reading and this seems like an interesting way to encourage him to build on his skills.

This would be great for my 6yr old who LOVES to read and be online, he is just getting to a point where he is teaching his 2yr old sister to read, this is something they could both enjoy!
