Can you believe Christmas is just 2 months away? It’s coming quick and I really am looking forward to it. I do my best to instill in my children that the season is about giving … although, I know I spoil them as well. And I love all the traditions we have for the holiday, like decorating the Christmas Tree, listening to carols, watching Christmas movies, Christmas Eve mass and more.
I try to collect a few new Christmas movies every year to build our library. One movie that you will want to have if you are a VeggieTales fan is It’s a Meaningful Life. Usually VeggieTales’ movies usually are loosely based on other fairy tales or movies, which helps make a connection for the viewers. In this case, there is a loose relation to the well-know holiday classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. They even misquote one of the most memorable lines, “Every time a bell rings, and angel gets its wings.” But in the VeggieTales version, every time a bell rings a customer gets his wings. You have to watch it to get it, but it was cute and made me ears perk up.
In It’s a Meaningful Life, Stewart (Larry the Cucumber) was planning on being a huge football star. An injury changes his path, leading him to be an important part of the community as he is in charge of the toy train factory, which supplies jobs to many citizens. He is married with two sons and has an adopted daughter. Plus he teaches a group of young kids to play sports. But to him, that is not “meaningful”. A mysterious train ride leads him on the path to show him what would have happened if he did catch the football and was not injured. He realizes that a lot of the good in his life would be gone – his daughter would still be in the orphanage, his sons wouldn’t be born, his wife would be unmarried, there would be no jobs in his town and the kids that he was teaching would be bullies.
The story offers a great message. It’s not fame that makes life meaningful, but the people and love around you. And that you have to trust God’s plan, even if it isn’t the track you thought you should be on. The DVD also includes a Silly Song “Goodnight Junior” which lots of parents can relate to, as junior needs ONE MORE THING before closing his eyes and going to sleep.
