My kids have been playing with their V.Reader since summer. It comes with a cartridge, plus they received the Toy Story 3 Cartridge at the time. And we always had the option to upload a few games for free, just for owning the V.Reader – but you have to add a memory card to the V.Reader to do that. Honestly, this mama never got around to that when the current cartridges offered them so much already.
Scooby Doo & a Mummy, Too:
But after a few months I started seeing fun new cartridges with characters my kids LOVE to add to their V.Reader Library. One of my top picks was Scooby Doo & a Mummy, Too. The minute my kids saw it I had to open it. They are HUGE Scooby fans, which my husband and I can appreciate. And you know, if your kids are really into a topic, they will love to learn and read with it. Admittedly, we love the story because of Fred, Scooby, Shaggy, Velma and Daphne. But what they learn with it can help prepare them for reading and school. The premise of the story is that Mystery, Inc is visiting an ancient Egyptian exhibit where the Professor has turned into Stone. So Scooby and Shaggy lead the way into solving the mystery, with your child’s help!
When playing, your child can either watch the story being read or they can read the story themselves. There are also 8 reading games:
What Happened?- Mystery Marks
- Food Phonics
- Happy Ending Letters
- Vowel Clues
- Around the Blend
- Phoneme Fun
- Spooky Spelling
These games assist in reading comprehension, spelling and punctuation. Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too is for kids ages 5 to 7 years.
Disney Pixar Cars: Tokyo Mater
Now, I knew the kids would love Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, too. But sometimes they can surprise you with what they like. They really aren’t big Disney Pixar Car’s fans, even though they do know the characters and watch the movie. But when given the opportunity to play Scooby-Doo, What’s That Sound, Toy Story 3 or Tokyo Mater they choose Tokyo Mater. In this game Mater the Tow Truck tells a tale about how in the past he had gone to Tokyo and ended up competing in a drift race. He has been modified for the race and if he won he would be known as the King of All Drifters. If he loses, the modification would be taken away. The story is fun, going by my kid’s thoughts, for fans of Pixar Cars and most other early readers.
The story, like all the cartridges we’ve played with, has a dictionary to help with new words. And you can touch pictures to make fun additional noises and actions. Plus, there are 8 games that help with possessives, consonant blends, special vowels situations and sight words. The sight word practice is EXCELLENT since that is what my son is learning now in school. The games include What Happened, Word Maker, Letter Merge, Special Sounds and more.
Cartridges for the V.Reader range in price between $14.99 – $19.99, depending on what deal you find at V.Tech Kids, Amazon, Toys R Us or Target.
