#HeelysWorldWide: It’s Still Walk & Roll For Me!

Next phase, new wave, skate craze, Heelys says – It’s still walk and roll for me

Okay … now that I am done destroying a classic Billy Joel song – let’s talk about walk and roll. I know you’ve seen Heelys. Those stealth skate sneakers that have wheels on the bottom so that kids can walk/ skate on flat surfaces. I love them! I always thought they were so neat, but somewhere in my head I kept hearing a very adult, boring, monotone voice saying, “Just for kids…” That was … until I got  the coolest pair of black and pink Heelys.

Being a young 32 who concentrates more on physical fitness through resistance training, I was worried I would fall on my face. But I was also determined that I can do anything I ask my kids to do. So on go the new Heely’s HX2, which have two wheels on the heel as opposed to the original one. This means it’s easier to balance, improving the learning curve so you can walk and roll faster. I would definitely suggest the two-wheel Heely design for:

1. Young Heely Wearers
2. Hesitant Heely Wearers
3. Older Heely Wearers
4. First-time Heely Wearers

And once you get used to the stride you need to use with these skate shoes, you can graduate to the one wheel design. Although, personally I’ll stick to my two wheels.

By wearing my pair around the house, I was able to figure out the proper way to take a toe step, followed by a skate step. Because, that’s the trick. You pretty much always start skating on the same foot each time. So I take a toe-step with my right foot, to keep the wheels off the ground. Then I take a step with my left foot, but this time flat so that the wheels touch. Then I kick off with my right foot and this time I let my wheels touch. So next I glide along. When I want to stop, I simply let my back heels touch the ground. See my video below:

SAFETY TIPS DON’T skate faster than you can run. DON’T skate in or near streets, around traffic, or stairs. DON’T skate over cracks, or through rocks, sand, or water. WEAR protective gear.

Once I managed to figure this part out, I was able to help my sons along. My 4.5 year old is catching on fast, which is what I wanted. The shoes provide him a lesson on balance and coordination, which I believe will help him with everything from sports to music and even math. It’s all connected, every time you get that brain working it increases the abilities in other sectors, as well.

After skating around in Heely’s with my son, I came to this conclusion. First, my husband would LOVE these. He is 31. Second, my brother-in-laws would love these. They are 22 and 24. Third, my nephew and niece would love them – ages 5 and 7. These shoes are just wicked fun for those young at heart. They are a great gift idea for holidays, birthdays and just because. Now, in regards to men – the Heelys’ size only goes up to 12. So men need to be a size 12 or less to wear them RIGHT NOW, but they are working to get a size 13 in the future. (Until then, my husband can wait…)

StingRay HX2 Style

And they are so practical too! Yes, that’s the MOM in my speaking. Because if you go somewhere you can’t skate, you just pop the wheels out and put a little cover where the wheels used to be. And when the wheels run low from use, you can get another set from Heelys.com.

JUST THE FACTS:

  • For the boys, Heelys Hx2 offers the “Stingray”. It provides a cool black, gray and yellow color update from its fall predecessor, making it a must-have.
  • For the girls, Heelys Hx2 offers a stylish update with the “Sparkler,” featuring a stylish black, blue and teal color scheme studded with jeweled accents.
  • Because moms have been looking to join in on the fun, Heelys Hx2 offers two of its most popular girls’ canvas-style shoes in sizes up to an adult size 9. The new “Jazzy” features a simple canvas look in both light blue and black with pink stitching that’s proving to be one of the most sought after styles in the new selection.
  • Heelys Hx2 has been available since July in sizes 12C–3 on the Heelys Shop and at a number of different retailers. The MSRP for the shoe is $54.99, making it a cost-effective choice for families.
