I SPY Super Challenger for Leapster Explorer and LeapPad

Looking for a new Leapster Explorer or LeapPad game to challenge your children? Well, one that I’ve found completely addicting – even for adults – is the I SPY Super Challenger. I told my husband after I tried it out that it could totally be an app for the iPad – it’s so fun, challenging and addictive.

The iSpy Super Challenger comes on one of those tiny green cartridges that can be used for both the Leapster Explorer or LeapPad. If you use it with the Leapster Explorer, you will need the stylus and D-Pad to play the games. If you play on the LeapPad, you will need the stylus and/or to use the faux D-Pad that will appear on the touch screen.

When you choose the cartridge for play you will be sent to the menu. There are 5 games to play, each increasing in difficulty the more you play and pass each level. Games include are:

Riddle Relay: This is my favorite game, and I think the one most will think of when it comes to iSpy. You start by listening to a riddle. For example, “I spy a lemon, an apple, a moon, a taxi, a bicycle and a red spoon.” You will look on 1+ pages for objects that are hidden on the page(s). Sometimes it’s clear what you are looking for in the mess of same-colored or jumbled objects. Sometimes objects will combine to make a new thing – like a smiley face could just be a smiley face. Or maybe 2 buttons, a banana and a coin will combine to make a smiley face. Even my three year old plays this game. He can’t read all the riddles, but they read them aloud for him and he is able to find the objects.

Spy Squares: I love Spy Squares. You have a group of objects on the bottom of the square that you have to move into graph like squares on the top of the screen based on theme or color. Sometimes the graph intersects, so you have to make sure the objects you line up match in both directions. It’s like a crossword puzzle with pictures.

Bug Catcher: This one is fun. It has you compare bugs as you catch them in jars. You may be looking for bugs that look alike, different, a certain color. And sometimes you need a magnifying glass (provided virtually in the game) to see these little critters and all their details.

Math Attack: Math Attack reminds me of Space Invaders from the old-school Atari. You have “objects” that you have to shoot into a moving row. You have to match the object you shoot with the line of objects you are shooting at. So if you have a green dinosaur, you may need to hit a blue dinosaur. And your next “projectile” might be a button that you shoot at a ball, since they are both round. If you hit a wrong object or miss, your moving rows stack up. And you also get chompers and bombs that help you get through the moving rows faster.

Fine Line: Right now, Fine Line seems to be the simplest game. Possibly I haven’t reached the challenging-for-me point. But it has marbles on the screen and it will ask you to divide them with “virtual rope”. It has a nautical feel to it.

I SPY Super Challenger is designed for kids ages 5-9. My three (almost 4) year old CAN play it since all instructions are also oral. I love the puzzles and think the game is challenging, yet fun. This will definitely appeal to the older kids who play with Leapster Explorers and the LeapPad. It is available at Target, Amazon and Toys R Us now for $24.99. This is a fab new addition to Scholastic Media’s award-winning and best-selling I SPY interactive franchise.
