I have not had a Shredder in my home for 4 years. The last time we had one, I was shredding documents I didn’t need anymore now that I was a SAHM and I killed the shredder. It couldn’t handle the use!
I felt lost without it, when I needed to shred old bank documents and bills I’d send a bag with my husband since he has a professional shredding service at his office. But really, that means I have to ask him to take the bag, remind him to take the bag, nag him to take the bag and then keep my fingers crossed that he remembers to take it in the office. Other times I actually bring my old documents to my parents house where they have a fire pit and burn them.
But I had the pleasure of introducing a new Power Shredder into my home, which can handle the amount I feed it PLUS has some safety features I love in re: to my personal identification and my children’s safety.
First off, this is the PowerShred P-12C from Fellowes. It is a TOUGH shredder and I can just stick paper after paper without it jamming. It can even do thick plastic cards (credit cards), junk mail that I didn’t bother to open, and it doesn’t even jam with staples. It can even handle small paper clips! Probably because of their steel cutters, eh? But I’d still remove paper clips just in case, because it does say not to pass large paper clips through the machine.
When it shreds, it crosscuts them. It’s not just long lines of paper that can be put together again. It is sliced and diced ninja-style.
As a mom, though, I love that it has safe sense technology. The shredder automatically stops when hands touch the paper opening. Crazy, right? I love that, though, since my 4 year old can be a little curious.
Other features include lights to let you know the temperature, if it’s starting to run hot from you getting rid of a year’s worth of documents, bills and bank statements. You can have your machine on auto-on, off or even set it to reverse if you mistakenly started shredding a document you need.
The pullout bin opens from the front and their is a manual lock on it to keep it from opening when in use.
Even though the machine is powerful, you have to treat it right. No large paper clips, no newspapers or cardboard, only 12 sheets per pass and don’t run it continuously for over 5 minutes. Remember, this is home or home office use – not heavy office use!
The machine is gorgeous, looking right at home wherever you put it. It’s a sleek, rounded black with some glossy silver accents. It’s not too large, when I stand next to the machine, it is under my knee cap. But the bin is generously sized to hold a good amount of paper.
This Power Shredder (the P-12C) has a suggested retail value of $89.99. It can be purchased at Target Stores nationwide. It is a great gift idea for college students, people who work from home or for yourself to help start your New Year with an organized filing cabinet!
