A Musical Instrument They Will Treasure: The Ocarina

Ocarinas areĀ ancient wind musical instruments, similar to a flute. There are different variations from four to twelve finger holes and the mouth piece. They are made from a variety of materials, like clay, ceramic, wood, plastic and even bone. And they make beautiful, unique gifts for children and adults.

The ocarina is considered easy to learn, can be very affordable, with prices starting at just $10, and are compact and versatile. Melodies are played by blowing into the instrument and covering or uncovering finger holes to produce a variety of notes.

For my oldest nephew’s birthday, I bought him a 12 Hole Tenor Ocarina, modeled after the Ocarina of Time from Zelda. He knows how to play wind instruments and Link is one of his favorite characters, so I knew it would be a hit.

For my youngest nephew’s birthday, I gifted him a Our Spider-Man Ocarina. It is 6.5 inches long and comes with a simple neck strap. For music, all his parents have to do is go online and download the Fingering Chart and Instructional Booklet. There might be a slight learning curve, but my nephew and his younger sister were both anxious to try it ASAP.

Both of those Ocarinas are available from STL Ocarina, but most recently we received a sample of the Elf Tenor Ocarina, along with The Lord of the Rings Songbook. This went to my own son, who is currently learning to play the Trumpet. It is inspired by the Lord of the Rings, with elfish written on the side. The Elf tenor ocarina is approximately 7.5 inches long, made of a glossy, ceramic material, has 13 notes and is in the key of C Major. This Elf Tenor Ocarina can perform sharps and flats. It is simply gorgeous! It retails for up to $79. There is also a 12 Hole Elf Soprano Ocarina that retails for $35.

The song book uses pictures to demonstrate where to place your fingers. There were 7 songs in the booklet, including “Concerning Hobbit”, “Evenstar” and “Eowyn’s Theme”.

Ocarinas are fabulous instruments. STL Ocarina has them in a variety of themes, price ranges and materials.
