SkylandersTrapTeamPlayMy 8 year old is going to be SO EXCITED. Like many kids, he loves Skylanders. He has a variety of the games for Xbox and Wii, plus an army of characters that he collects and action figures too. I think those came with Happy Meals or Kids Meals from local fast food restaurants. We also have the Crayola Color Alive coloring books for Skylanders. And now they are releasing a cartoon. Uh-hum, I mean, “Animated Television Series”. Sounds a lot classier when you say it that way. But honestly, it’s going to be pure entertainment for him AND we can stream it from Netflix!

Skylanders Academy will premiere in Fall 2016 on Netflix. The series follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a group of heroes with unique elemental skills and personalities who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers and showing the next wave of Academy cadets how to do things the “Skylander way.”

Over the last five years, we have watched these characters turn from toys into heroes on game systems. Now, my son will be able to watch his favorite characters come to life on Netflix. It almost feels like this is all backwards, isn’t it? Normally from television to toy to game? Now it’s game to toy to television! But this narrative storytelling will just be a new way to bring these characters to life.

Skylander’s Academy is produced under the supervision of showrunner Eric Rogers (“Futurama”). It features the voices of Justin Long (“Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “Ask Me Anything”) as Spyro, Ashley Tisdale (“Phineas and Ferb,” “High School Musical”) as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”) as Eruptor and Norm MacDonald (“Saturday Night Live”) as Glumshanks. Additional voice talent includes The Diamond Minecart, Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, James Hetfield, Catherine O’Hara, Bobcat Goldthwait, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jonny Rees, Harland Williams and Richard Horvitz.
