I also have two of these Memo Boards “in real life”. They hang in each boys’ room. One is orange and the other blue. If you know a young girl or boy who likes to get crafty, this is a great gift idea. It comes with directions on how to make the most simple bracelet. But then you can go online for friendship bracelet tutorials (video and pdf format) on making neat patterns – like hearts, penguins, arrows and more. Despite their excitement for back to school shopping, parents are still timid about spending.  According to a new survey, 40 percent of moms are planning to buy the minimum for back-to-school. The common reasoning is, “It’s a tough economy and I’m spending less.” Yet even in the midst of the touch economy, the majority (63 percent) of parents still are excited about back-to-school shopping with one third claiming, “I love school supplies and this is one of my favorite times of year.”

A surprising result from the survey was that dads are planning to spend more than moms, despite a third of them feeling that back-to-school shopping a “necessary evil.” Nearly a quarter of dads plan to spend more this year than last with an average median spend of $210 vs. $171 for moms.

Additional findings from the survey include:

• Wallets are Thin: The majority of parents (82 percent) will be spending the same or less than last year on back-to-school shopping, leaving only 18 percent spending more than previous years.
• Clothes Preferred over Supplies: More than half (52 percent) of moms are most excited about picking out clothing and shoes, as opposed to the basic school supplies (25 percent), backpacks/lunchboxes (11 percent), art equipment (10 percent) or electronics (three percent).
• Dreaded Time of Year: A third (28 percent) of parents referred to back-to-school shopping as a “necessary evil,” and 10 percent said “I’d rather be doing anything else.”

"Lochlan! Yoda is gonna get you!"

I spent the week before Mother’s Day peeling stickers off my boys walls and doors. It is not an easy task. I sprayed and soaked them in diluted vinegar and window cleaner, trying to loosen the adhesive. I know my kids aren’t the only ones that do this. I understand they want to decorate their room, but it needs to be done in a way that can be removed when you need or want to repaint, redecorate or for any other reason have a sticker-free wall.

Easter is only a few days away. Are you in a last minute shopping frenzy, looking for ideas that aren’t calorie-filled and overly sweet to fill your child’s Easter basket? Well, number 13 on my Easter Basket Ideas for 2011 included Hexbugs. Small, collectible, cool and they provide hours of fun. What’s funny is that after I wrote that list I found out they actually had the same idea I did – except improved upon!

Not only are they packaging special Easter Hexbug Nanos in orange/clear eggs. These Hexbugs are dressed for the occasion, wearing little removable pink ears. I’m not quite positive of the color assortment of these Easter Hexbugs, but I have seen olive, pink, purple, yellow and blue.

Recently I had the chance to share the fun of these Easter Hexbugs with my sons’ friends. Each friend received one Easter Egg with a different assorted Easter Hexbug. Most of the kids were boys, but we did have two girls who love the Hexbugs in pink. And the ears totally up the awww-factor.

I hid HexBugs eggs in my backyard for friends to find during a playdate. So that’s a great idea for Easter – I just suggest marking your hiding spots for these buggers, since you don’t want to lose them before you play with them! On Easter, you can also simply present them in an Easter Basket with eggs filled with Hexbugs (already pre-packaged in their eggs) and pack the other eggs with GOMU Erasers and stickers. I also am adding Wipe-Off books, Dry-Erase Markers and Zippies.

Luckily, some of the kids we invited to the party were already aware of Hexbugs and owned them – so they have sets to play with them at home. But you don’t need a set to have fun. If you have a train table, that’s a perfect place to let them loose since they will bounce around on the table and not topple over the edge. You can let them loose on the floor too, but I like seeing them bounce into obstacles and turn around. It makes them look so bug-like and realistic.

One mom was concerned about batteries. I told her that if they seem to be dying or dead to leave them off for a while. Often the battery just seems to need a rest after a day of continuous play. I experience this with any electronic toy that the boys first get their hands on. The batteries seem to wear out because they never want to put it down. But through normal usage I find the bugs seem to last through several plays before needing a new battery. I buy 2-packs of batteries on sale at Target when I see them for $2.99. So that is around $1.50 per cell battery. You need a tiny screwdriver to get the battery in. And I always suggest picking up extra batteries along with any Hexbug purchase.

If your child is in school or daycare, you might run into the problem – what to make for lunch. But you have to take more into consideration than just that. How are you going to pack it and how can you make it healthy. I’ve been doing a lot of research and I can tell things have changed from my lunchbox days. Or at least many parents are trying to make sure their kids are going to school with a filling, healthy lunch.

The only “con” is that the container is not leakproof. If you want to add a sauce, like ketchup or dressing, you most likely want to pack it into another small container. Or, if you are packing ketchup, just put a small piece of clear wrap tucked right into the square, touching the ketchup. The suction seems to keep it in place. And like mentioned before, if you use the corresponding Cooler Bag, your lunchbox will remain upright. I’ve actually accidentally flipped my cooler bag with ketchup in the container with no problem at all, although I won’t make a habit of it.

Summer 2010 - New Scar

Last year on vacation my then 2 year old son fell off the bed, landed on a Lego Minifigure and sliced his cheek open – deep. Deep enough that we had to go to the ER for stitches. And then my little monster PULLED THE STITCHES OUT the next day. So the area didn’t heal clean. Instead it had a stretched out look to it.

I have put different creams on it with really no luck, hoping to make the scar go away quickly. I know he is handsome no matter what, but he had perfect preschooler skin … and now he has a scar. It will go away one day, but if I can make it go away quicker, isn’t that better?

So someone offered me a “magic un-marker” to help erase scars. It is called ScarAway and it is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of scars resulting from surgery, injury, burns, acne, stretch marks, cuts and insect bites. An it’s easy enough for me to apply quickly in the morning and after his shower in the evening. It does leave a little wetness on his cheek after we apply, but it dries quickly. There is no scent or color. It is clear when you apply and stays clear.

ScarAway is not for open wounds and it is for external use only. You don’t want to use near eyes or mucous membranes. And if your child is under 6, you will want to tell a doctor if you are considering use. We see our pediatrician so much these past few months, she knows what we are trying.

Y’all know I love finding cute, inexpensive things to share. It’s been a while since anything has struck my fancy the way Zippies do. Zippies are circular, flexible ID tags that you can hang on water bottles, book bags, luggage, strollers and more. What makes these special are their cute faces, which resemble tigers, bunnies, walruses, sharks or are almost too unique to really say WHAT it is – so you and your kids can use your imagination.

The front of the tag is made of this soft, colorful plastic that just screams cute and cool. While the back has room for you to write a name and number in permanent marker. There is a special clip on it that let’s you attach it to various common water bottles. And you can also clip it to almost any carry bag.

I love it because not only is it a clever, stand-out from the crowd tag. But it just has so many uses that it’s a great excuse to buy the whole series. (Yes, there is a series, so expect a new wave of collectible faces from Zippies!) Here are the uses I thought of:

1. SCHOOL: Book bags and lunch bags can be easily identified.

2. VACATIONS: Clip it to luggage, camera bags, diaper bags and purses – you never know when a bag might be lost in a rush.

3. THEME PARKS: Clip it to your kids’ pants. If they get separated, a park employee can call your cell phone.

4. GYM: Attach it to your gym bag and water bottles, so there is no mistaking who it belongs to.

5. BABY: Attach it to strollers and diaper bags, in case mommy brain gets the better of you.

6: KIDS: Attach it to your kids’ bicycles. In my neighborhood they pick up bikes that are just laying on the sidewalks and many of them sit unclaimed in the front office. With a tag, the office would know who to call.

7. KEYS: Anyone who has keys – adults or kids – can attach this to their key ring. It will help their key ring stand out and if misplaced, they can get reconnected with the keys though a quick call.
