Are you ready to get back to school with Velcro? Right now they have this HUGE online sweepstakes going on, which offers up to $5,000 in prizes! You can win:

Dorm Room Starter Kit – 1 Winner: MacBook Air, InCase 13″ Neoprene Sleeve, Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Wireless Keyboard, Epson All-in-One Printer, $100 iTunes Gift Card

Dorm Life Kit – 3 Winners: Apple iPad, Apple iPad Case, Keyboard Docking Station, $75 iTunes Gift Card

College Necessity Kit – 6 Winners: iPod Nano, $50 iTunes Gift Card

To enter this HUGE sweeps, visit www.facebook.com/velcrobrand. Choose the Back-to-School Sweeps from their sidebar. From there you get to design a ‘virtual’ VELCRO® brand Memo Board and write a memorable 100-word story describing the adventure depicted on their board. A winner will be chosen based on the number of votes their board receives. And every winner will receive 20 Velcro Brand Dorm Survival Kits to share with friends.

I actually entered and had fun with my entry. You can see it below. Get your entry in before the contest ends on September 25th, 2011.

I also have two of these Memo Boards “in real life”. They hang in each boys’ room. One is orange and the other blue. They use little Velcro fasteners to attach “important” and “fun” items on to their board – like cards and drawings. These are great for all school-aged children, college students and offices too. I just suggest hanging these on a hook, as opposed to the tape backing, because the tape backing keeps falling off our walls. A hook has been much more stable for display. These Memo Boards come in fun, fab colors like orange, purple, blue, green and black.

Four Winners! Each winner will receive Velcro Memo Board

Think back to when you were a ‘tween. You’d take 4+ pieces of heavy string and knot them into multicolored friendship bracelets for yourself and your friends. Back then my husband would pin his end and I usually tied my end to a stationary object. But Friendship Bracelet Making has been updated with a neat “on-the-go” tool that will act as a place to “hold” your bracelet as you knot, keep the loose strings in their proper place and also store all your colorful strings. Meet My Friendship Bracelet Maker!

If you know a young girl or boy who likes to get crafty, this is a great gift idea. It comes with directions on how to make the most simple bracelet. But then you can go online for friendship bracelet tutorials (video and pdf format) on making neat patterns – like hearts, penguins, arrows and more. And if you Google, you can even learn how to make your own patterns. My Friendship Bracelet Maker doesn’t limit your creativity, but gives you the jumping off point to really get imaginative.

I enjoyed following the patterns and trying out new things. My favorite bracelet was a skinny purple and pink one. I plan to make a red and white one to match my son’s school colors. And then I am going to finally pass this cool tool to my niece after refilling her string selection. Little packets of strings for the bracelets can be picked up for .15 at most hobby stores.

I know if I enjoyed it, my niece will too. She is 6 right now. I would say this is awesome for girls 6 to 15. The one pictured above is styled for girls, with a pink butterfly and pink and green coloring. There is also a Clip Board Bracelet Maker, appropriate for boys. That one has a circular clip with a peace sign to hold the bracelet and the colors are yellow, blue and green.

My Friendship Bracelet Maker retails for $19.99. You can buy them at toy stores and hobby stores. One of the best places to pick it up, both in stores and online, is Toys R Us.
The common reasoning is, “It’s a tough economy and I’m spending less.” Yet even in the midst of the touch economy, the majority (63 percent) of parents still are excited about back-to-school shopping with one third claiming, “I love school supplies and this is one of my favorite times of year.”

A surprising result from the survey was that dads are planning to spend more than moms, despite a third of them feeling that back-to-school shopping a “necessary evil.” Nearly a quarter of dads plan to spend more this year than last with an average median spend of $210 vs. $171 for moms.

Yoda is gonna get you!"

I spent the week before Mother’s Day peeling stickers off my boys walls and doors. It is not an easy task. I sprayed and soaked them in diluted vinegar and window cleaner, trying to loosen the adhesive. I know my kids aren’t the only ones that do this. I understand they want to decorate their room, but it needs to be done in a way that can be removed when you need or want to repaint, redecorate or for any other reason have a sticker-free wall.

The wall stickers from Wall2Wall Stickers solve that problem. Their wall stickers, which vary from tiny to mural-sized, are meant to be removed, to either be replaced on another wall or simply to redecorate with ease. And even though they come off easily, they stay on perfectly. I’ve had wall stickers from Wall2Wall Stickers stay on without a problem for over a year, unlike other “wallies” which peel off over time or stay stuck for seemingly forever.

And Wall2Wall Stickers has an awesome collection of themes. My favorite theme is Star Wars, since my kids are so into them. Wall2Wall Stickers has LIFESIZE (practically) of Obi-Won, Yoda and Anakin, among other characters. They also have Disney Pixars Cars, Harry Potter, Strawberry Shortcake, Tinkerbell and much more. There are themes that are perfect for babies (Winnie the Pooh), kids (iCarly), teens (Tron Legacy) and adults.

Most recently, we have been battling those heavy, plastic glow-in-the-dark stars. They just won’t stay on the wall, becoming shooting stars as they fall onto the floor. What a waste of money! But the Celestial Stars and Planets Collection rocks. It is just enough stars to cover a small room. For larger rooms, 2 packs will do the job. Each pack has a mixture of planets and stars in various sizes.

With a blacklight, the glow lasts all night!

The Celestial Stars and Planets Collection glow in the dark and look awesome when combined with a black light. 1 pack has 4 sheets with 258 “elements” – some the size of dimes – some the size of a soccer ball! Each pack costs $14.99. It makes an awesome birthday gift, in my opinion. My boys LOVE THESE. And they even had a hand in decorating their rooms with them. My youngest has a bunk bed, so I climbed up with him to decorate that wall while my husband worked on the other three walls.

And you aren’t limited to kid’s rooms. You can take these wallies to give new life to snooze-worthy walls in your bedroom, living room, hallway or kitchen. One of the ones that caught my eye was the Tree Wall Decals. I was going to put it in my living room, since I thought the pink flowers would look excellent against my gray wall. But then I remembered that my bedroom had a huge blank blue wall. I decided to put the tree there, working around the chair rail. It came with instructions on how best to place the trunk, branches, flowers and leaves. And the end result was close to the provided image. And my boys even helped with this one, I let them place a few of the brown leaves. The Spring Blossom Decal is bright, cheery and I love it! It is around 5 feet high when completed and just under 4 feet wide. I would love for a taller version to be available in this style. It retails for ONLY $19.99. What an affordable way to breathe life into any room!

Are you in a last minute shopping frenzy, looking for ideas that aren’t calorie-filled and overly sweet to fill your child’s Easter basket? Well, number 13 on my Easter Basket Ideas for 2011 included Hexbugs. Small, collectible, cool and they provide hours of fun. What’s funny is that after I wrote that list I found out they actually had the same idea I did – except improved upon!

Not only are they packaging special Easter Hexbug Nanos in orange/clear eggs. These Hexbugs are dressed for the occasion, wearing little removable pink ears. I’m not quite positive of the color assortment of these Easter Hexbugs, but I have seen olive, pink, purple, yellow and blue.

Recently I had the chance to share the fun of these Easter Hexbugs with my sons’ friends. Each friend received one Easter Egg with a different assorted Easter Hexbug. Most of the kids were boys, but we did have two girls who love the Hexbugs in pink. And the ears totally up the awww-factor.

I hid HexBugs eggs in my backyard for friends to find during a playdate. So that’s a great idea for Easter – I just suggest marking your hiding spots for these buggers, since you don’t want to lose them before you play with them! On Easter, you can also simply present them in an Easter Basket with eggs filled with Hexbugs (already pre-packaged in their eggs) and pack the other eggs with GOMU Erasers and stickers. I also am adding Wipe-Off books, Dry-Erase Markers and Zippies.

Luckily, some of the kids we invited to the party were already aware of Hexbugs and owned them – so they have sets to play with them at home. But you don’t need a set to have fun. If you have a train table, that’s a perfect place to let them loose since they will bounce around on the table and not topple over the edge. You can let them loose on the floor too, but I like seeing them bounce into obstacles and turn around. It makes them look so bug-like and realistic.

One mom was concerned about batteries. I told her that if they seem to be dying or dead to leave them off for a while. Often the battery just seems to need a rest after a day of continuous play. I experience this with any electronic toy that the boys first get their hands on. The batteries seem to wear out because they never want to put it down. But through normal usage I find the bugs seem to last through several plays before needing a new battery. I buy 2-packs of batteries on sale at Target when I see them for $2.99. So that is around $1.50 per cell battery. You need a tiny screwdriver to get the battery in. And I always suggest picking up extra batteries along with any Hexbug purchase.

The Easter Hexbugs are available exclusively at Radio Shack. You can find other Hexbugs at Toys R Us, Radio Shack, Target and online at Hexbug.com. They are actually less expensive than the regular Nanos, even with their cute ears! Easter Hexbug Nanos retail for $4.99. Current Nanos in the test-tube retail for $7.99.

But you have to take more into consideration than just that. How are you going to pack it and how can you make it healthy. I’ve been doing a lot of research and I can tell things have changed from my lunchbox days. Or at least many parents are trying to make sure their kids are going to school with a filling, healthy lunch.

One way to help you get in a complete lunch is the Easy Lunchbox system. It’s looks familiar to mom, simple plastic containers with colorful tops. But you have faith in knowing these containers are sturdier, BPA free and that it’s a greener option compared to “traditional” brown bag lunches. Plus, they are Bento-Style Lunch Boxes, which means they have 3 separate sections that you can pack healthy options into tightly. I think that creating a Bento Style Lunch really helps parents create colorful, attractive meals that the kids will be more likely to eat. And there are PLENTY of ideas of quick, Bento lunches EasyLunchboxes.com.

Now, you can order the 4-container set by itself for $13.95. But if you don’t have a cooler bag, then you’ll want to order one of those as, well. Those cost just $7.95. The cooler bags come in black, purple, dark red, olive and aqua. Aqua is my favorite – so bright!

BENEFITS of the EASY LUNCHBOX SYSTEM:

The containers are sturdy

The containers are reusable – eco-friendly lunch boxes mean less waste, saving you money!

Microwave safe

Dishwasher safe

BPA Free

The Cooler Bag keeps your Easy LunchBox “upright”

Playdate Lunch

The only “con” is that the container is not leakproof. If you want to add a sauce, like ketchup or dressing, you most likely want to pack it into another small container. Or, if you are packing ketchup, just put a small piece of clear wrap tucked right into the square, touching the ketchup. The suction seems to keep it in place. And like mentioned before, if you use the corresponding Cooler Bag, your lunchbox will remain upright. I’ve actually accidentally flipped my cooler bag with ketchup in the container with no problem at all, although I won’t make a habit of it.

PLAYDATE LUNCH:

One of the first lunches I made in mine was for a play date with friends at the park. I packed strawberries, white-meat nuggets, and kethcup for dipping. In the cooler I also added some juiceboxes and containers with goldfish crackers and the icepack. It was a hit! And my kids love the containers for at-home use too!

OVERALL:

Packed to-go

From the e-mails I read, I know that many of my readers are looking for ways to stretch their dollars. With an EasyLunchbox System, you will save money through packing a lunch, and you won’t be wasting money on ziplocks, brown bags or other disposable items. And less disposing means you are saving the environment one ziplock bag at a time! Those things just don’t disintegrate! Plus, the bento style of lunch helps remind “mom” to add some veggies and fruit with that sandwich you packed … for yourself and your kids.

ORDERING INFORMATION:

Step 1: Visit EasyLunchBoxes.com

Step 2: Add a 4-pack of the Container Sets for $13.95

Last year on vacation my then 2 year old son fell off the bed, landed on a Lego Minifigure and sliced his cheek open – deep. Deep enough that we had to go to the ER for stitches. And then my little monster PULLED THE STITCHES OUT the next day. So the area didn’t heal clean. Instead it had a stretched out look to it.

I have put different creams on it with really no luck, hoping to make the scar go away quickly. I know he is handsome no matter what, but he had perfect preschooler skin … and now he has a scar. It will go away one day, but if I can make it go away quicker, isn’t that better?

So someone offered me a “magic un-marker” to help erase scars. It is called ScarAway and it is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of scars resulting from surgery, injury, burns, acne, stretch marks, cuts and insect bites. It is 100% Silicone Gel and it has three little metal ball rollers that massage the silicone onto the affected area. What makes this special it that the silicone and the massage balls work together to reduce the scar appearance faster.

Spring 2011 - 1 month of ScarAway Use

Over time it will shrink, flatten and fade both new and old scars. The sooner you start using it, the faster you will see results. Since my son’s scar was almost a year old, it is taking it’s time improving. I read it could take as long as a year! So I keep using it. I think I see a tiny difference, but when he is out in the sun, it turns red. But it just needs more time, according to the directions. An it’s easy enough for me to apply quickly in the morning and after his shower in the evening. It does leave a little wetness on his cheek after we apply, but it dries quickly. There is no scent or color. It is clear when you apply and stays clear.

ScarAway is not for open wounds and it is for external use only. You don’t want to use near eyes or mucous membranes. And if your child is under 6, you will want to tell a doctor if you are considering use. We see our pediatrician so much these past few months, she knows what we are trying.

SCARAWAY is a brand new scar diminishing cream that will be available at Walgreens in April!

Y’all know I love finding cute, inexpensive things to share. It’s been a while since anything has struck my fancy the way Zippies do. Zippies are circular, flexible ID tags that you can hang on water bottles, book bags, luggage, strollers and more. What makes these special are their cute faces, which resemble tigers, bunnies, walruses, sharks or are almost too unique to really say WHAT it is – so you and your kids can use your imagination.

The front of the tag is made of this soft, colorful plastic that just screams cute and cool. While the back has room for you to write a name and number in permanent marker. There is a special clip on it that let’s you attach it to various common water bottles. And you can also clip it to almost any carry bag.

I love it because not only is it a clever, stand-out from the crowd tag. But it just has so many uses that it’s a great excuse to buy the whole series. (Yes, there is a series, so expect a new wave of collectible faces from Zippies!) Here are the uses I thought of:

1. SCHOOL: Book bags and lunch bags can be easily identified.

2. VACATIONS: Clip it to luggage, camera bags, diaper bags and purses – you never know when a bag might be lost in a rush.

3. THEME PARKS: Clip it to your kids’ pants. If they get separated, a park employee can call your cell phone.

4. GYM: Attach it to your gym bag and water bottles, so there is no mistaking who it belongs to.

5. BABY: Attach it to strollers and diaper bags, in case mommy brain gets the better of you.

6: KIDS: Attach it to your kids’ bicycles. In my neighborhood they pick up bikes that are just laying on the sidewalks and many of them sit unclaimed in the front office. With a tag, the office would know who to call.

7. KEYS: Anyone who has keys – adults or kids – can attach this to their key ring. It will help their key ring stand out and if misplaced, they can get reconnected with the keys though a quick call.

Tazmo is Protecting my Gym Bag

I also think they make great, small gifts for:

Easter Baskets

Christmas Stockings

New School Year (For any grade level – even college!)

Party Favors inside a Birthday Goody Bag

Zippies are available online at www.zippiesfun.com and found at select retailers. They retail for $4.98 each of $39.99 for the entire limited-edition first series. The first series comes in 10 different characters:

Wally the Walrus

Faina the Frog

Tazmo the Tiger (Squee! My favorite!)

Chip the Cool Blue Dude

Kayla the Kissy Pink Lady

Bruno the Dog

Paco the … Green Guy that wants to Chomp

Flops the Bunny

Edge the Nervous Purple Dude

Ranger the Robot (that resembles a shark)

I received the first collection and decided to spread the fun with family and friends. Since I love Tazmo I put him on my gym bag. Ranger is for my husband’s gym bag. Chip is attached to my oldest son’s backpack and Paco is on my youngest son’s backpack. Kayla went to my niece and Edge to my nephew.
