As a girl, the period between 6th grade throughout college can be kind of traumatic. Pimples, boobs, “cycles”, dating, driving, school, graduations, breaking-up … and more. At the age of 13 you are still at the beginning of learning how to deal with being a woman. Many girls look at magazines, pining to be as attractive/thin/famous as the people pictured.

But you know what I wish I knew at 13? One – not to give up your dreams because of a fear of failure. I was so afraid to take chemistry in college because a lot of people I knew had trouble in the subject, so I decided to give up my dream of being a vet, since chemistry was a subject I had to take. I was afraid of failure. Two – that being skinny is not everything. At 5’6″, my highest weight was 130 pounds, at my lowest 99. I never truly found a weight I was comfortable with until I started working out and learned that lean, heavy muscle makes for a nicer body than twiggy skinny. Three – boobs just don’t matter. LOL. I was always WAITING for my boobs to grow. Uhm. They didn’t. And you know what, I got teased in high school by “stupid boys”. But those same “stupid boys” still chased me in college and beyond. I never lacked for dates or options – boobs just don’t matter, confidence does.

Honestly, one reason I am glad I have boys is so I don’t have to deal with girl issues I faced growing up. But I do have a niece and a goddaughter, and it is important to be a role model and to represent good values and healthy attitudes for them. Everyone has the opportunity to make a difference in a young girl’s life, and that’s where the Dove Self Esteem Movement comes in.

Be a part of the first ever Dove Self-Esteem Weekend on Oct 22nd – 24th, where one hour of your time can make a world of difference. There are conversation starters and a weekend toolkit available on the Dove Movement website (www.dovemovement.com) which provides ideas for self esteem activities you can partake in over the weekend and place on a map. You can also stay updated by connecting to the Dove Facebook and follow the conversation on Twitter.

I have to say, when I was reading about the movement I saw that one thing women wished was that their moms took more of an interest in talking to them about beauty and body image. Make-up and taking the time to look your best is not a bad thing! My mom always told me my eyebrows were fine – but the truth is, it wasn’t until I started having them waxed did I feel good about myself. (Thanks for the honest truth, sis.) Sometimes you just have to stop and listen to your child.

Like I said before, I thought I needed big boobs when younger – but I learned that was silly for me in the end. But something as simple as waxing my brows made me feel beautiful. I think it’s teaching a beauty routine that can go a long way. Teach them how to put on make-up in a classic, elegant way. Show them how to dress for success. Even something as simple as a bodywash that smells wonderful or conditioner that really works can go a long way. I love my mom, but my sister ended up teaching me more tricks in beauty that made me feel better about myself. Or I found things on my own.

Like there is something about a refreshing shower with scented body wash. I have recently tries and like the new go fresh Revive Body Wash from Dove that is scented like pomegranate and lemon verbena. The body wash is pink, creamy, luxurious and can make a girl feel special and ready to start the day.

My sister was the one who taught me to tame my crazy hair. Honestly, most days it is lose, wavy and slightly frizzy. (Thick hair attracts more moisture, which is where the frizz comes from. So if you have frizz, it means you have thick hair others would be envious of!) My hair does get damaged a lot from the sun, wind and salt. But Dove has a damage therapy intensive repair conditioner that helps prevent split ends and breakage. If you can control split ends and breakage, it makes it seem like your hair grows faster (because less is breaking off). My hair has already grown a wonderful amount this past year, but the last few weeks of using the intensive repair daily treatment conditioner really has made my hair just awesome after styling. Hey, I still have to iron it, but it really just looks healthier! I love that the fiberactives in the formula don’t weight my hair down, so it still has some flow.

So what about you? What advice would YOU give a 13 year old? And what are your beauty must-haves?

But ever since we got the Little Looster, the boys has no reason to use a small floor potty. The shorties can use the REAL toilet all the time. But, even though they can reach the toilet, they still have to get their bony butts on a “grown-up” seat. But the WeePod from Prince Lionheart lets them have their own “throne” to poop in comfort.

The WeePod is cushiony, but no liquids are absorbed into the seat like other cushions we’ve run into. You really have to be careful about that – if a cushion has pores it will disintegrate and stink over time, no matter how much you clean and disinfect it. But the WeePod can be cleaned easily, the cushion can separate from the base for easy cleaning and it is fitted to your toilet with a turn of a knob, so it won’t slip and slide while your child sits.

It has a “pee guard”, so if your boy pees sitting down it won’t spray everywhere. If used with the Little Looster, your boys can still pee standing up over the pee guard bump.

The WeePod comes in pink, blue and green. I loved all the colors, but chose green for its gender neutrality. They retail for $33. I almost would want to skip the small potty altogether and just use the WeePod/ Little Looster combo as you potty train! It’s comfortable, easy to clean and no more cleaning a SEPARATE POTTY! :woot: :woot:

The minute they touch that toilet, the eww factor is huge. Other than the toilet bowl brush (which I replaced with a Fresh Brush), the plunger is one of the yuckiest items in the house. But it’s there. Sometimes in the garage – often the ugly pink plunger with the wooden handle is sitting next to the toilet.

Since a plunger is a must-have, I was uber interested to learn there is a NEW PATENT PENDING plunger that is coated to be bacteria resistant AND it stays dry…. even when dunked in water. The handle is non-porous- unlike wood – so it is easier to clean and not a haven for bacteria. And the head of the plunger can move to adjust to your toilet for an optimal plunging experience.

We haven’t had to use it yet … thank goodness… but I have to say it’s a lot prettier than the old plunger too. The handle is clear and the plunger plastic is white. It blends in more to a bathroom.

There is a coating that keeps the plunger bacteria resistant, so you don’t want to touch anywhere but the handle.

The most amazing thing about the plunger is seeing it in action, though.

Cool, right? Pretty much, it is the cleanest plunger you can possibly own! You can get it from NeverWet.com or call 1-866-383-7066. It normally retails for $39.95, but you can buy it now for $19.95.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

We’ve been using Dove Men + Care for a few months now. There are a few different scents, but we tend to go for Clean Comfort Body & Face Wash. It has micromoisture ingredients that fight dryness, keeping skin comfortable. And we LOVE the men’s loofah (aka Shower Tool). My husband has tried two different “shower tools”, the one from Axe and the one from Dove – he prefers the one from DOVE MEN + Care. He leaves the Axe one for me. The reason is he likes the scrubber side on the Dove Men + Care one better, since it is not as rough as the one on the Axe shower tool.

The scent of Clean Comfort is not overpowering or cologne-like, as is often the choice men have for soap scents. The body wash creates a lot of suds and leaves a nice, clean scent when he was done, in my opinion.

We aren’t huge bar soap fans, so we tend to skip that option. The scent is nice, but bar soap is so hard to get a grip on, leaves soap scum and it’s just nicer to use the Shower Tool/ Loofah with the Body Wash as compared to bar soap.

Overall, my husband the Dove Men + Care Shower Tool is a must-have and we love the Clean Comfort Body Wash. The Body Wash retails for $4.99 and the Loofah/ Shower Tool is $3.99.

Common questions are:

1. When do I begin?

2. How do I begin?

3. What do I need to begin?

The answers are not that complicated. First, you begin when you feel you and your child are ready. I like to have everything ready for training by the time they are one, so they can get used to seeing the potty chair or Potty Booster (Looster). But when you actually begin and “end” training is up to your child and you. Readiness signs include staying clean for long periods of time and telling you when they’ve pee’d or pooped.

How to begin, other than choosing your tools, is not complicated. Choose a day to start training and take it slow. If your child stays dry after naps, to me that’s a great time to sit them on a potty when they wake up. Why? Because, most probably they’ll have to pee soon, so you are setting them up for success. Modeling is another great way to introduce using the potty. Finally, there are great videos out there, like Potty Time.

(Check out Potty Training Boys Part 1 and Potty Training Boys Part 2 for more in-depth information on … Potty Training Boys.)

Little Looster

Next you need the right products for Potty Training. There is only one no-no that I know of in the product world – that is any potty training seat that has a soft cushion. That’s because eventually liquid will seep in and it will become a haven for bacteria. You can choose a seat with bells and whistles, but I personally don’t think it’s a necessity. There is the Boon Potty Bench that I trained my oldest with, as well as the Bjorn Potty Seat that I trained my youngest on. Both have their pros and cons.

The Boon Potty Bench is like the Cadillac of Potty Benches. It can be used as a step stool, has a cover, a pee shield for boys and it can hold toilet paper on the side. The con is the size, which is HUGE. It takes up so much room in a small bathroom.

The Bjorn Potty Seat is small and travel sized. There is no separate insert, just dump and clean. That also means no crevices for waste to seep into, which is great. The only con is that you have a separate item to wash and dump waste from, when it would be so much easier to just clean a toilet.

BUT, you have to check out this NEW PRODUCT called the Little Looster. I am POSITIVE it will be available at Target, Wal-Mart and Babies R Us soon! But in the meantime you have to order it direct from their site. It is this U-Shaped step stool that lets your child step up and use the big potty – with or without an insert.

Both my boys do not use an insert on the potty. Instead they used to CLIMB up on the big toilet to use it. Although, it was easier for my youngest to just pee standing up in the little Bjorn. So I had a potty chair and toilet to clean. And I hated how my oldest had to actually TOUCH the toilet to climb up onto it, but he liked using the big toilet. Unfortunately, he is just a “wee one” at 37 inches tall and 4 years old, so he needs to climb to get up on it. The same with my 2 year old, who is 36″. He needs to climb onto the toilet to use it. YUCK!

The Little Looster has saved them from touching the toilet, though. And ever since I introduced it, my 2 year old will stand on that to pee in the big potty. And I gave him the choice! With the Little Looster he can be “big” and additional potty seats became obsolete.

So why do I love the Little Looster?

1. It lets my kids get onto the big toilet without touching it over and over.

2. It acts as a stool so my little one can stand on it and pee like a big boy into the toilet.

3. It’s unique design allows it to curve around the toilet, so it doesn’t take that much space – even though it is big enough to support the boys.

4. It’s sturdy and has a skid-resistant design

5. Eliminates the need of a little potty – giving you more space in the bathroom

6. It’s recyclable after use – although you can always donate it to a friend in need

It’s a new product, so currently it’s only available in white, which means you have to wipe it when your kids wear shoes. I would love to see it produced in other colors – Pink, Blue, Green, etc! So let’s keep our fingers crossed! You can purchase it at LittleLooster.com for $39.99.

Only Oregon companies were used in the making of this revolutionary product, from the cad designer, website creator, patent attorneys, injection-mold-makers, plastic injection company and finally the shipping supplies. It doesn’t get more “Made in the USA” than that!

Eventually I turned him over to loofahs and liquid body soap. I always found it left less soap scum, making it easier to clean the bathroom. But back then the soap scents and loofahs were all kind of feminine. Eventually some guy companies realized men were moving away from slippery bar soap to liquid body soap … and they started making more manly scents to go with it. I loved these new “cologne-like” scents and would buy a lot of them for my husband to try. Finally, within the past year I started seeing more “manly” loofahs. They have a flexible plastic shell, the loofah on one side and a scrubber on the other. But there wasn’t a lot of competition in that market. Well, now there is a new name in the game.

There is a new Dove Men + Care product line that targets men who have reached a point in their lives where they are comfortable with themselves, but not in their skin. Dove Men + Care address these issues so men can literally be comfortable with their skin. Dove introduces, MEN+CARE, the brand’s first-ever product line created specifically for men. The new products are designed for men who have a reached a point in their lives where they are comfortable with themselves, but not in their skin.

You see, many men put up with cleansing products that are harsh and drying, without realizing these products leave their skin feeling dry, irritated and uncomfortable.

Dove Men + Care Benefits:

Provides the cleansing and refreshment that men want combined with Dove moisturizers to provide total skin comfort

Built on the Dove brand’s heritage in cleansing, moisturizing and care

Clinically proven to fight skin dryness

No irritation or tightness

Dermatologist recommended

OUR TEST:

We received the body bar, body wash and loofah (aka Shower Tool) to try out. My husband loved the Shower Tool compared to the other one we own, which I think came from Axe. He liked the scrubber side on it better, which was not as rough as the one on the Axe shower tool.

He also liked the scent of the new body wash, which was not as strong or cologne-like as other men scents. The body wash created a lot of suds and left a nice scent when he was done, in my opinion.

The bar soap seemed small to us, but it might have been a sample size. We also haven’t used bar soap in FOREVER. But the scent was nice. But bar soap is so hard to get a grip on. And it’s nicer to use the Shower Tool/ Loofah with the Body Wash as compared to bar soap.

Overall, my husband is sold on the Shower Tool and we would buy the Body Wash again. So it’s cool that there is a $1.00 off coupon on the Dove Men + Care site right now.

The body and face soap is available in extra fresh and deep clean. Two bars sell for $3.19. Six bars sell for $7.49. The Shower Tool sells for $3.99 and I definitely suggest it!

I love organic products, since they are designed to be gentle on their skin. I recently had the opportunity to try a new-to-me bath product from Fresh Organics, which was a conditioning Shampoo and Wash.

This conditioning shampoo and wash is hypo-allergenic and super convenient that you can use it in their hair, as well as a body wash. It is made with essential oils of organic lavender and sweet orange, so it smells absolutely wonderful, plus it gets the kiddos CLEAN. It should be tearless, but nothing is tearless for my kids. If soapy water gets in their eyes, they always turn red and I have to rinse it out. Maybe they are just very sensitive, but I just avoid getting it in their eyes. Overall, I think that this product leaves my kids smelling great, looking clean and I can feel secure in knowing it was made with my child’s well-being in mind.

There is no sodium lauryl/ laureth sulfates, no parabens, DEA, TEA or MEA, no petroleum, mineral oils or phthalates, no artificial colors or fragrances and no nut oils, gluten, soy or dairy. It is allergen free, earth friendly and the squeeze bottle it comes in is 100% recyclable. There are 8 fluid ounces in the shampoo & wash bottle.

Why do I trust the products that come from Fresh Organics? The family behind the product has done amazing research on these products to benefit their own son, as well as all other children. You see, their son Nash had developed unexplained allergies, rashes and chronic colds. It turned out he was allergic to dairy, soy, most synthetic fragrances, petroleum products and sodium laureth sulfate. And to his parent’s astonishment, and mine too, many products designed for babies have synthetic perfumes and other allergenic or potentially toxic chemicals. But Fresh Organics consulted with top chemists, dermatologists and herbalists to develop this line of baby products that are organic, hypoallergenic and free of potentially damaging chemicals for everyone’s children.

My oldest likes Elmo. My little one LOVES Elmo. Like obsessive. His love is actually common with preschoolers and toddlers. And after watching Elmo a few times, I can’t say I have a problem with it! He’s overall a good little monster with a desire to learn and sing – like my son.

So it’s no wonder that my son loves to do anything that has to do with Elmo. And if Elmo can make portions of bathtime easier and more fun – why not roll with it? That’s why it rocks that there is a whole selection of Elmo bath products … which also feature some other kid-loved, mom-approved Sesame Street Characters. The line includes:

Foam Soap

Foamy Hand Soap

Bubble Bath

Shampoo

Finger Paints

Fizzy Tub Colors

Body Wash

And these products come in awesome scents, like watermelon, cherry and berry! We recently had the opportunity to try some of these fun, bathtime products, such as the Shampoo, Bubble Bath and Finger Paints.

The Sesame Street Shampoo was Apple Scented – not overwhelming at all. It is hypo-allergenic and tear-free. My kids are really sensitive to anything in their eyes, though, so I am careful when I rinse their hair out not to test out that theory. But sometimes it accidentally gets in their eyes – and there really were no tears. The bottle of shampoo is 16 fl oz – a good amount that should last a while! It features Elmo on the bottle.

The Bubble Bath was WONDERFUL! I loved the wet wild watermelon scent. It was a green color, also featuring Elmo. The minute my son saw it, he wanted to take a bath over and over and over. It also comes in 16 ounces. The amount of bubble it made with a small capful was PERFECT for my two boys.

Finally … the Bathtime Finger Paints. It came with 3 colors – Red (for Elmo), Yellow (Big Bird), Blue (Cookie Monster). At first I would pour the colors in little “piles” and let the kids dip their fingers in it. Then I let them do it themselves. They loved it and we made it educational, as I asked them to name their colors or we would write letters and numbers into the paint. Although they can paint on themselves with it, don’t let it sit too long on them. I was a little sensitive to it if it sat on my skin too long. But the kids had a blast and were sad when it was all gone. It lasted about a week. I think they would make good stocking stuffers!

Overall, I would definitely purchase these products again! It was totally worth it to see the smile on my toddler’s face! It made bathtime fun for them…. and me!

Sesame Street Bathtime Products are made by the Village Company. They also sell other products, like Mr. Bubble, Rubber Ducky Bubble Bath, Village Naturals Bath Shoppe, Village Naturals Therapy, Village Naturals Foot Therapy and Village Naturals Body Scrub.
