Florida has warmed up. Now is the perfect time to enjoy icy treats, like ice cream, popsicles and icees. Or as we called icees in Puerto Rico, piraguas! In Spanish the word Piragua comes from combining the word pyramid (Pirámide) for its pointy shape with the Spanish word for water (agua) since it’s just frozen water. Put it together, you have Piragua! And then you top it with a fruit flavored syrup, like coconut or mango.

But really, when we were in Puerto Rico the Piragüero would have flavors like Cherry and Strawberry, too. Usually the Piragüero would drive around the neighborhood with a block of ice in the back of his car. We’d go running out with change in hand and he’d make us our favorite flavors. If we didn’t buy them from the neighborhood truck, then we still had the option to buy one after school from a push cart!

What is the difference between an icee or piragua? Really, it depends on where it’s from. Although, some purists may say that Snow Cones are made of crushed ice, so they don’t hold the syrup as well. Piraguas and Snow Balls are shaved ice, which hold the flavor of the syrup more. And Piraguas have that Pyramid Shape to them. Also, in Puerto Rico you have more fruit flavors (Coconut, Cream, Sugar Cane, Passion Fruit, Pineapple, etc.) while I think Snow Cones offers different flavors, like Root Beer, Banana and Blue Raspberry. But there are crossover flavors, like Cherry, Grape, Strawberry and so on.

So, since shaved ice is superior (in my opinion), how can you make this sweet, cool treat at home? Well, the easiest way is with an ice shaver. There are manual and electric ones available. I’ve tried the Jelly Belly Manual Ice Shaver, which is fine if you are just doing 2 – 4 at home. If you are going to make shaved ice for a party, buy or rent an electric ice shaver!

The Jelly Belly Manual Ice Shaver comes with two circular freeze trays. You will want to use them to create a block of ice, because trying to use regular cubes or crushed ice is harder in this machine. Put your block in and start cranking the handle. Since it doesn’t have suction cups, you have to hold down the machine with one hand and you can’t easily crank the handle where you think you would, you have to hold the handle further down the arm. That’s why this is only for home use, because you won’t want to make more than a few at a time with the combination of needing a specific ice block and the awkward way of holding the machine down and cranking it.

But for $12, it works and the shaved ice is so SOFT and melts easily in your mouth. It absorbs the syrup perfectly, making each bite delicious. My kids LOVE this treat and so do I. Next year I think I’ll splurge on the $24 Jelly Belly Electric Ice Shaver though.

I’ve used two different Snow Cone Syrups with our shaved ice. One was the Blue Berry from Jelly Belly. It was sweet and delicious. The other one was a Strawberry Syrup from Costa Rica. YUM! My kids and I liked mixing them together for the 4th of July effect – hello Red (Strawberry), White (Ice) and Blue (Blue Berry)! There is a huge selection of Jelly Belly syrups, from the traditional (Very Cherry) to the unique (Cotton Candy).

Here are links to the products I used (or suggest trying) to make your own Shaved Ice treats this Summer and Spring!

TheMomBuzz was recently invited to help kick-off Coke with Meals by testing or putting my own twist on one of the mouth-watering recipes I found on My Coke Rewards. This new site features recipes and how-to videos from Chefs G. Garvin and Ingrid Hoffmann. There is lot of ideas and inspiration. You can even create a shareable cookbook of your family’s all-time favorites … or simply post your favorites to the ever-popular Pinterest, right? I may not be a cooking blog, but I am a mom blog! And I cook! So here we go…

The original recipe was Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast by G. Garvin. You can see him prep and cook in the YouTube video below:

When I went to the store to start getting the ingredients, the chicken breast was too expensive. And I wasn’t sure about the goat cheese. And I forgot the spinach. Ha! So this is my Stuffed Turkey Patties.

INGREDIENTS:

16 ounces of Ground Turkey

Salt

Black Pepper

Red Pepper Flakes

2 Tablespoons of Minced Garlic

McCormick Italian Seasoning (Basil, Thyme, Etc.)

Laughing Cow Cheese – w/Basil, Mozzarella, Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Sun Dried Tomatoes

Olive Oil

Broccoli

Directions:

Heat oven to 375

In a bowl, mix the ground turkey with the garlic and seasonings to taste

Separate the ground turkey into four sections

Turn each section into a meat patty and fold it around a wedge of Laughing Cow Cheese

Pour some olive oil into a pan

Brown each patty on each side, around 2 minutes each side, on a stove top

Put the browned patties into an oven-safe dish. Bake until cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Serve with steamed broccoli on the side and sun-dried tomatoes as a (delicious) garnish

OUTCOME: The dish was DELISH. I actually had my own patty and an extra 1/2. And my husband had two. They were juicy and mouthwatering! I will definitely make this again!

But I am excited to give the kids something different this weekend, with Pillsbury having special edition Easter cookies with Disney Characters!

When at my local supermarket, I saw that I could choose either Minnie Mouses or Lightening McQueen. With two boys in my household, I easily went for Lightening McQueen. The package had images of Lightening McQueen and Mater on the front, so I thought maybe inside it would feature a variety of characters. But in reality they only featured the star of the show, Lightening McQueen.

I haven’t baked mine yet, we’re waiting for Friday. But here they are in the packaging and pre-cooked. We’ve had these cookies before, just without Lightening McQueen on top. They bake easily and quickly, in ten minutes. And they taste like a butter/sugar cookie to me. Sweet. And kids will like the image on top. It’s like magic.

Save a $1.10 when shopping for your Easter Pillsbury Ready to Bake! Disney Cookies with the coupon found at this link: Save $1.10

These cookies are also nice to share at play dates or to bring for Easter brunch with friends and family.

How do you like to eat jelly or fruit spreads? In our house we go through a large jar of Welch’s every two weeks. I actually don’t know if that is “fast” or “slow”. We go through one jar of Peanut Butter a week. That’s because we all enjoy fruit spreads in different ways.

For my husband and oldest son, they like it in their PB&Js. For me, I like fruit spread on my pancakes, so I don’t get to have it as often. My youngest likes it on bread by itself as a special treat. My grandmother used to use fruit spread between layers of cake. And I bet it would be yummy with a muffin or mixed into yogurt!

If you are going through a lot of jelly and fruit spread, you might want to take a second look at what you are eating. One thing that is important to me is no high fructose corn syrup. And just recently I found a natural peanut butter that doesn’t separate and is delish! So how about pairing it with Welch’s Natural Spreads?

Welch’s Natural Spreads are:

All Natural

No High Fructose Corn Syrup

No Artificial Flavors or Colos

No Preservatives

100% North American Grown

So far I’ve only seen them in two popular flavors, Grape and Strawberry. There is buzz that it’s also available in Raspberry. I’ve tried the Grape and Strawberry. Their consistency reminds me of other fruit spreads, more “together” than jelly, which lumps, separates and seems more messy. Fruit spreads are easier to … spread. So they are better for my son’s lunch box and less messy for a snack. The taste is great, I don’t feel like I am “missing out” on anything just because it’s natural. It’s satisfyingly sweet and tastes great.

Grape and Strawberry are available in the 27 oz plastic jar, 19.8 oz squeeze bottle and 17 oz glass jar. The Raspberry is currently only available in the 17 oz glass jar.

My friends know I am usually loaded with little snacks to get me through the day. Because if you let yourself get “hungry”, your metabolism slows and you will possibly overeat at the next meal. I remember when I was at the office, I’d eat breakfast around 7 am and not eat again until noon. And then again at dinner. I was SO HUNGRY and my stomach was always aching. And as a busy mom, it’s just as easy to forget about yourself, while you always remember to pack a drink and snacks for the kids for playdates or school breaks.

Well, this buzz is for you. It’s a few snack items I’ve tried (and so have my kids) from Kraft Foods. And a few quick meal ideas too!

Light Snacks:

First off, there are those SnackWell’s 100 Calorie Packs. I’ve tried the Cinnamon Creme Drizzled Caramel Popcorn and the Peanut Butter Pretzels. They are both 100 calories and provide an adequate larger-than-a-handful snack amounts By weight, the Cinnamon Creme Drizzled Caramel Popcorn is 1.06 ounces per package and the Peanut Butter Pretzels are .78 ounces. Next comes taste.

My oldest and I favor the Peanut Butter Pretzels. The salty round pretzels with a smooth peanut butter coating is a great mix. My youngest, though, likes the Cinnamon Creme Drizzled Caramel Popcorn more. It’s caramel popcorn, which honestly I never eat out of those holiday tins. But they make it more special with the Cinnamon Creme Drizzle on each. They definitely have a satisfying crunch, though!

Prepackaged does make it easy to throw in a bag to eat in a “crunch”. I throw them into my oldest son’s snack bag for his morning break, in my lunch bag to share with my youngest during play dates and I also throw them into our back pack for longer day outings, most recently visiting a family member at the hospital. It was 2 hour drive there, a 2 hour drive back and a 3 hour visit. I didn’t want to chance cranky, hungry kids during a delicate visit.

Another snack idea, that takes a little more planning, are MilkBite Granola Bars. They are made with real milk and have to be stored in the fridge or with an icepack if you are bringing it for a work or school lunch. But they have a creamy taste and are definitely satisfying. I actually wrote a MilkBite review about them in February. Back then I only had tried the Chocolate Chip and the Strawberry. Now I’ve also tried Peanut Butter. YUM! I can’t choose a favorite anymore – all three are really satisfying with their own unique flavor.

LUNCH & DINNER HELPERS:

Okay, for lunch I normally pack a PB&J for my youngest. I use the run-of-the-mill Peanut Butter brands. My husband usually buys natural peanut butter for himself, but I don’t make sandwiches out of them. The flavor and consistency of the not-so-common brands make me nauseous. But there is one brand of natural peanut butter that tastes just as yummy as regular peanut butter, and it’s Planters Natural Creamy Peanut Butter! They know peanuts! There is no separation, it goes on creamy and has just the right peanutty taste. My son doesn’t realize the difference in his sandwiches and I love the flavor.

And I just bought two new products, just appeared in our local supermarket this week, FreshTake. There are 6 available flavors on the shelf, but the Chili Lime & Panko was already sold out by the time I went shopping. I did get the last Rosemary & Roasted Garlic. And I also bought Cheddar Jack and Bacon. The other three flavors you can choose are Savory Four Cheese, Southwest Three Cheese and Italian Parmesan.

The idea behind these FreshTakes is that you buy your preferred flavor along with your choice of chicken, pork or fish. (I bet you can do this with beef and turkey too!) Each FreshTake comes with a cheese/breadcrumb mix. You open the package and mix the seasonings and cheeses in their bag. Then you add your meat into the bag too, to coat it. Then you bake. All done! How is easy is that for dinner! I am making the Rosemary & Roasted Garlic Recipe with Chicken Breasts tonight! Wish me luck!

Toppings and Mixes:

Have you ever felt that your Hot Cocoa needs more marshmallows? There are now Jet-Puffed Mallow Bits available in a sprinkle-like container. Use it to add more marshmallows to hot cocoa, as a topping on a chocolate cake, or for ice cream too. Admittedly, my kids like them just as they are.

And, this one is for my husband, Crystal Light Energy Mix. Get your energy on-the-go with four flavors – Grape, Wild Strawberry, Peach Mango and Citrus. 10 packages per box, 5 calories per serving. It contains caffeine and a mix of energy releasing B vitamins.

They celebrate 100 years today! And to celebrate they released a special edition (not on the shelves too long) Oreo Cookie!

The new limited edition Birthday Cake Oreo cookies is a chocolate cookies sandwich, with the cookies imprinted with OREO and 100 on it. And the inside is a delicious funfetti-like cream on the middle. It tastes like vanilla cupcake cream! I shared a pack with my sons and they were just so delicious! We ate the pack together in less than a week – and I hid them from my husband. That’s how delicious they were.

Look for them on shelves now – and buy two when you find them. You won’t be disappointed!
