So it’s no surprise that Cheerios, who already has so many tasty flavors, decided to try their hand at integrating the sweet taste into their heart-healthy cereal. The minute I heard the news, I told my sister (Puerto Rican) and a friend (Cuban). They all agreed that it’s really hard to successfully duplicate the flavor. Especially since I grew up with homemade Dulce de Leche thanks to my grandmother. (I love you, Mama!)

So, when I received a box of the cereal to sample through MyBlogSpark, I immediately “dug in”. Just opening the box let loose the sweet, caramel scent. And I swear, as long as a box is in my house, my house smells sweet, just like the cereal. I offered some of the Dulce de Leche cereal to my youngest, who likes “circle cereal”, and he loved it. So I poured him a bowl. And then I poured him a second bowl. Then he was full. But he had more that night.

And ever since Rice Krispies came up with “Rice Krispy Treats”, lots of other cereals came up with versions of snacks and meals you can make with their cereals. From smooshing cereal for a casserole topping, to mixing them with nuts and choco chips for a fun snack mix. The great thing about all these flavors of Cheerios, and especially the new Dulce de Leche cereal, you can really make something tasty with one of their many flavors. Below is a fun snack mix you can make for yourself (work-time snack) or child (school-day snack), as well as a yummy parfait that has lots of healthy ingredients.

Dulce de Leche Cheerios Snack Mix: Combine pretzels, nuts, cheese crackers, M&Ms or mini chocolate chips with Dulce de Leche Cheerios for a sweet and salty munching mix with a crunch. Perfect for a mid-day work snack or your child’s school snack. I am making this for both my kids next week.

Dulce de Leche Cheerios Parfait: Jazz up your yogurt by layering Dulce de Leche Cheerios with fresh fruit, like bananas, strawberries and bananas. See my picture to the right!

Last year I discovered that you can mold hard boiled eggs into fun shapes using an egg mold and ice water. The process to shape the egg is quicker than boiling eggs and the result is cute and fun for children and adults. And it is a big hit in the bento community!

To get started you need an Egg Mold. You can purchase a variety of Egg Molds from Amazon. They usually come as a two-pack, but I have seen a Hello Kitty Egg Mold which sold by itself. Here are some cute designs to consider, prices start at $3.60 for a set.

Rabbit and Bear Egg Mold

Fish and Car Egg Mold

Heart and Star Egg Mold

STEPS TO MOLD YOUR EGGS:

First, you boil your eggs like normal. Have trouble boiling eggs? Try Emeril’s Perfectly Boiled Eggs directions.

Next, get a bowl of ice water ready. You want enough cold water to submerge your egg molds and I add lots of chipped ice.

Once the eggs are done, remove them from the pot and start peeling the shell off. You want to do this when they are still warm. I have used either a towel to hold onto the hot egg as I use a spoon to remove the shell. I also will run the eggs under cold water as I remove the shell, which also helps remove any tiny pieces of shell that want to stick to your egg. Either method works fine.

After I remove a shell, I immediately place the deshelled egg into an egg mold. Try to place it in a way that would best fill the mold once you shut it. Shut and clasp the mold and insert it into the ice water.

You will have the egg mold with the egg in the ice water for three – five minutes. Three works fine. Five if you are feeling cautious the first time.

Open the egg mold, release the formed egg, salt and pepper if desire and eat!

TIPS: You can be working on multiple eggs at the same time. As soon as I put one in a mold, I deshell the next egg and put it in it’s egg mold and ice water bath. By then it’s time to release the previous egg and I can de-shell a new one. It’s a quick, continuous process. It’s best to have 2 egg molds to work with, though. Thankfully they are mostly sold in two-packs.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and tips! Any questions or thoughts, just ask below!

The other day I stepped into a different supermarket, since it was next door to a Dollar Tree I was shopping at, and I was just disgusted. The store had poor lighting and simply didn’t look clean. I would have expected lower prices with such a disappointing interior. But nope, most of the items I would normally buy were actually more expensive, especially without Publix’s amazing BOGO deals that you can always find. I ended up abandoning a shopping cart mid-aisle just to get out of there with my son without cooties or wasting money. And two day later I shopped at my beloved Publix for the items I needed.

Okay guys, I am about to fill your brains with some interesting information regarding Whole Grain Cereals. Crazy, who would’ve thought that talking about Whole Grains was interesting? Well, will your ears perk up if I tell you that this affects some kid-favorite cereals … and ones adults like to snack on too? Like:

Cinnamon Toast Crunch! We love that one in our house.

And the ever-faithful, heart-healthy Cheerios (Honey Nut or Original).

Lucky Charms, one of my son’s favorite choices thanks to the marshmallows.

Total. Okay, I admit I never tried it – but I will soon thanks to the White Check.

So what is this White Check I keep blabbering about? Well, when you see it on a box of General Mills Cereal, it is signaling that Whole Grain is the first and main ingredient in the cereal. Cheerios is the winner with 23g of Whole Grains per serving, followed by Total (21g), Honey Nut Cheerios (14g) and Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch are tied at 11g. Dietary Guidelines recommend you get at least 48 grams of whole grain in your daily diets. So get a jump-start on the day’s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine with these yummy cereal choices.

WHOLE GRAIN TIPS:

According to Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “the Doctors,” identifying whole grain products can be challenging. But he has some tips to help you add whole grain to your diet

Start Early! When choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.

Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.

Don’t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don’t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.

GAME AND SWEEPSTAKES:

Here is some fun buzz. To help you choose products with whole grain, General Mills developed an online educational game called “Fast Lane for Whole Grain“. During the game you will navigate virtual grocery store aisles to identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.

One reader will win: 5 boxes of General Mills cereal with the white check

FIRST: MANDATORY ENTRY:
With which of your favorite General Mills cereals with the white check will you kick start your morning this New Year?

SECOND: EXTRA ENTRIES:

To receive these extra opportunities for entries, you must fulfill the first REQUIRED/MANDATORY entry. But for extra entries, you can do the following – leave a comment for each:

I am always on the hunt for a good reusable water bottle for the boys to take to school. So when I heard the buzz about Vapur, which is reusable AND can be folded/rolled up, I was totally intrigued. So I received a sample to review, along with a Vapur “sweater” … which I will talk more about in a second.

The Vapur bottle comes in two sizes, .5L and .4L. I have the .5, which is perfect for my work-outs. The top is just like a plastic water bottle that you would normally purchase, with a pop up spout and plastic cover. The plastic, pop-up top will screw on and off so you can clean it and fill it with water. It’s a small opening, like that off a “normal” water bottle, so I have to be careful when filling it from my fridge, so I don’t splash onto the floor. You can’t really add ice to it, but you can freeze it to a desired temperature. You know, leave it in until it’s ice, or just really frigid. I tried that, but decided adding cold water from my fridge is fine for my needs.

As you fill the bottle, you can feel the bag design expand. The bag comes in a variety of colors, like green, blue, violet, pink, orange and black. The .4L sizes also have a white design. There are also fun designs with sharks, super heroes, palm trees and more.

When you finish drinking your water, the bag size obviously decreases, but the plastic is sturdy enough that it doesn’t just slump over. Really, it reminds me of a water pouch cowboys would use – not a canteen, but the more flexible ones. (And if you can think of what that is really called, please let me know. I am sure it has an official name.)

Back to the point, once the Vapur bottle is drained, you can roll it up or flatten it, so it takes up less space in a lunchbox, back pack, exercise tote, etc. It can even be rolled up small enough to fit in a pocket or purse.

The Vapur Bottle doesn’t add any undesirable flavor to my water. Tastes just like water! It has an FDA-approved inner layer that is odor, taste and stain resistant. You can wash it on the top rack of a dishwasher and air dry. It can also be washed by hand. I prefer the dishwasher, though. It is BPA Free.

It come with a removable clip, so you can attach it to a bag. And you can also write on it with a sharpie so if misplaced it will go back to the original owner (great for kids at school).

I was going to give the Vapur to my oldest son, but he had trouble popping the top open at first. But that was when it was brand-new. Now that I’ve used for my workouts for about a month, he has no trouble popping it open for his own sip.

This Made-in-the-USA bottle retails for $9.99 for one .5L bottle or $15.99 for two .4L bottles. Next school year I’ll be getting the two .4L bottle deal for my boys.

PINNED UNDER BACK-TO-SCHOOL ON PINTEREST!

VAPUR SWEATERS:
Now let’s talk about the Vapur Sweater. You know how during the day, you water bottle “sweats” and will get other items around it wet? It happens to my oldest son all the time, making his folders in his book bag wet. And for me, since I throw my water bottles into my gym bag, my workout notebook usually ends up damp. But the Vapur Sweater is a water-wicking, insulating sweater. So not only does it keep it from getting other items around it wet, it will also keep your water “cooler” than ever. Plus, they are uber-cute.

They currently have three colors for the .5 and .4L bottles – pink and grey (matching my preppy Otterbox case), blue and grey and black and grey. You can buy 1 for $6.99 or a 3-pack for $15.

I love my Coca-Cola Zero – Zero Calories, plenty of Caffeine. But recently I noticed something different about my 2-Liter Bottles – their tops! They all have a Polar Bear peeking at me and a web address – Coke.com/ArcticHome. So what’s that about?

Well, polar bears are practically synonymous with Coke. They’ve been part of Coca-Cola tradition since 1922, representing icy cold refreshment and friends and family togetherness. But our Arctic Bears need some help, so Coke has teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for the “Arctic Home” campaign to raise awareness and funds to help create a safe haven for the polar bear.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Coca-Cola has already made a commitment to helping the WWF and polar bear habitat preservation by donating an initial $2 million. They will also MATCH YOUR DONATIONS through March 2012 —up to $1 million. There are two ways to donate and have Coca-Cola match your donation:

1. Simply text the code on specially-marked Arctic Home packages to 357357.

2. You can also make donations online at ArcticHome.com.

Each donation accompanied by a code from specially-marked packages will be matched by Coca-Cola. Plus, a designated parcel of the virtual Arctic Home refuge will be donated in your name on the site.

LIMITED-EDITION RED CANS:

You can find Arctic Home Coke Bottles wherever you purchase your normal Coca-Cola products. You can also notice new red “Arctic Home” cans on store shelves. This new limited-edition can advances awareness of Coca-Cola’s efforts to protect the polar bear’s Arctic home. If you notice something is different and you have to look twice – it’s working. I personally think the new cans are cute.

POLAR BEAR TRACKER:

If you visit Coca-Cola’s Arctic Home, you can check out an adorable video into. You will also have access to the Bear Tracker, where you can learn more about individual bears, their weight, families, videos and more. You can also see how much has been donated thus far.

CODE FOR FREE SHIPPING (Expires 1/1/12 so order ASAP): Mombuzzfreeship

When making school lunch for my son, it can get pretty boring (to me) making him a PB&J almost every day. Really, it’s the only “lunch” he’ll eat. So I always try to vary it with different fruits, veggies and snacks. And I always cut his “boring-to-me” sandwiches into shapes using sandwich cutters.

Currently we have sandwich cutters that cut his sandwich into 4 hearts, 2 trains or 2 dinosaurs. He loves them, and so do his classmates and teacher! The one thing I noticed about his sandwich cutters is that they don’t cut all the way through, I always have to flip the sandwich in the cutter upside down and press down on the bread to cut it the rest of the way.

So when I was introduced to Fun Bites, I was intrigued. They said they were different than traditional sandwich cutters, and they were right. It’s a two-part cutter with a rocking/cutting motion. Currently they have two styles, a heart puzzle and checkerboard. To use them, you take the cutter and push down on the meal item (sandwich, bread, deli meat, cheese, fruit, etc). Then you use a rocking motion to fully cut it through. Finally you use the second part of the Fun Bite to push out the cut pieces.

The Fun Bite material is thicker and more durable than the traditional sandwich cutters. They are BPA Free. It also cuts through the bread better. But, it also leaves more unused bread when making sandwiches using the heart shape, so I leave the cutout in the bread crust when I pack my son’s lunch. I have also used these cutters with cheese and deli meat. They would also work with pancakes, waffles, quesadillas, deli sandwiches, veggie/ turkey burgers and more!

Here is a video to see it in action:

WHERE TO BUY:

Currently you can purchase Fun Bites direct from their website at FunBites.com. There are two styles to choose from, the checkerboard or the heart puzzle. Each one retails for $12.99 or you can buy them both for $19.99. If you order before 1/1/12, remember to use the Free Shipping Code: Mombuzzfreeship

Next week my sister, niece and I will be getting together to Horneando Juntas – or bake together! We are going to be making batches of cookies. I have two recipes I am going to be bringing to make with my sis. First, we are making Rum Balls. They are wicked-good. Second, I found this awesome recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookie Suprises. The outside is a chocolate chip cookie shell, while the inside is a Hershey’s Kiss! Adorable, right?

The joy in our Horneando Juntas, which is Spanish for “Baking Together”, is not just the end-result of Santa-Approved Cookies. But in being together, sharing and making memories.

For both of my recipes I am using some favorite Hershey’s Products, their Cocoa Powder for the Rum Balls and the Kisses for the Chocolate Chip Cookie Surprises. If for some reason neither of those recipes gets your Sugar Plum Fairy Dancing, then I have a few more options below.

TIPS ON HOSTING YOUR OWN HORNEANDO JUNTAS:

Invite guests at least two weeks in advance, giving them time to RSVP and provide the recipe they plan to make.

Inform your guests of the total number of people attending and ask them to bring at least a half of a dozen cookies per guest, with which they will exchange their batch.

Encourage them to arrive with an empty, sealable container to take home other guests’ cookies, but make sure to have extra just in case, because tasting your friends’ sweet treats and bringing them home is what an horneando juntas is all about!

Consider hosting an horneando juntas on a Saturday morning and invite your guests to bring their children – they will enjoy the cookies as much as you will!

Don’t forget to play festive music to start welcoming the holidays in spirit!

Be sure to offer a hot seasonal beverage, such as HERSHEY’S® Cocoa or warm apple cider. You may also want to have coffee, tea, milk or juice.

Everyone loves a goody bag! To complement the array of cookies at your horneando juntas, ask that your guests provide their recipes in advance so that you may create recipe books to provide to your guests in commemoration of your party.
