My youngest son and I suffer from allergies. Blah! To alleviate our symptoms I use the following products and items:

1. Oreck UV Halo Vacuum – it kills and removes the following allergens – dust mites, bacteria, molds.

2. Clorox – to kill mold in the kitchen and bathroom.

3. BISSELL 2X Multi-Allergen Advanced Formula – This is my favorite cleaner to use with my Bissell steam cleaner, since it targets allergens like dust mite waste, pet and pollen allergen.

4. Honeywell Humidifier: Since I started using the Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier 3 months ago, I noticed a decrease in nighttime sneezing and sniffles! I love it!

5. all Free & Clear: It’s been my favorite laundry detergent for … oh… somewhere between 4 – 6 years. Pretty much, ever since I had babies. That’s because it is free of dyes and perfumes – for both sensitive noses and skin! And even better, I just learned it removes 99 percent of the #1 spring allergen – grass and tree pollen.

None of the items really TREAT allergies, like medication will. They don’t prevent or mitigate your reaction to allergens. But if you can remove the allergens from your home and clothes, you may able to decrease the amount of allergy medication you normally take. For example, I personally stopped taking medication this year. I am taking my son to the pediatrician for additional allergy relief, though.

Now, I know allergy sufferers can be a little “scared” to venture outdoors. Imagine all the allergens you might drag back into your safe haven! But with some help from the products above, you can be more comfortable. Yes, we do still sneeze and sniffle during allergy season, just a lot less! But when I visit OTHER houses who don’t use the same products, we are forced to take medication! It’s crazy, so I know it makes a difference.

Now, to remove allergens from blankets, towels, clothes and other washables – remember your all Free & Clear. According to a recent study, on a peak pollen day up to 7 million pollen grains can get trapped on a large t-shirt. But all Free & Clear can remove up to 99% of those allergens.

I load up on all Free & Clear! One full-size sample and another bottle bought by me, ready to go!

I like the ease of the liquid detergent over powder. To me it leaves clothes softer. Powder seems gritty and harsh to me. And all is just superb at getting clothes clean! One little bottle (depending on the size you buy) can do between 28 – 32 loads. So that is about a bottle a month for me! (With 2 boys, me working out and my husband working out – we have a lot of laundry!) I feel really good about how my clothes look once I pop them out of the dryer. They smell fresh and look clean! What more can you ask for?

I am sure many moms know their kids aren’t overly excited about brushing their teeth. And I learned the hard way that even if it looks like your child is brushing by themselves sufficiently, they probably aren’t. Not until they are 6 years old should you let them brush completely on their own, according to my boy’s pediatric dentist. And even the, it should be under parent supervision.

So, they moan and groan as I edge them into the bathroom to brush their teeth. One thing that usually motivates them into getting it done is to get the Sugar Bugs off their teeth. I came up with the idea, thanks to an app on their Leapster Explorer. And since they’ve actually “seen” Sugar Bugs on the game, they want them off their teeth.

We also tend to use power toothbrushes over manual ones. They just seem to let me brush longer with them. And when I hand over the toothbrush for them to try themselves, they brush more vigorously, as well.

I also talk them through it, so they know I am brushing their back teeth, the back of their teeth, the front of their teeth, their top teeth and so on. So hopefully when they brush on their own, they are aiming for those same areas!

As part of a good toothbrushing routine, I am thrilled to see Star Wars Toothbrushes are on the market! Sunstar GUM launched these Star Wars toothbrushes in the spirit of the re-release of The Phantom Menace in 3D. There are manual Star Wars tooth brushes, as well as a line of Power and Lightsaber brushes. Here is what those power Star Wars toothbrushes look like:

The larger Star Wars power toothbrushes are available in two characters, Darth Vader or Rex. The bristles oscillate, to cover more tooth area than the child will cover by manual brushing alone (in my opinion). They have a base on the bottom so you can stand them upright when not in use. (MSRP $5.99)

The lightsaber toothbrushes are available in blue (Anakin), green (Yoda) and red (Vader). They don’t oscillate or vibrate. Instead they flash on and off for a minute before turning off. So you can have your child brush the top part for one minute and the bottom part of their mouth for another minute. I like the timer. (MSRP $3.99)

Buzzworthy idea: These will be perfect to pack for Star Wars weekend at Disney World, as party favors for a Star Wars themed party or as stocking stuffers around the holidays!

Overall, children will love to Brush Like a Jedi™ and defend their teeth against cavities by using these GUM Star Wars toothbrushes!

One reader will win a Star Wars Toothbrush set from Sunstar GUM. MSRP $10

Since we are in Florida, we spend A LOT of time outdoors. Play dates at the playground. Chilling at the local or my sister’s pool. Beach Days. Beach Vacations. Theme parks. You name it, our Spring and Summer is mostly spent outdoors.

In my day tote – for outings with the kids – I remember to pack snacks for rumbly tummies. Drinks and water to stay hydrated. A tiny first-aid kit for the inevitable ouchies. Sun Lotion to protect against sunburn and skin damage. And finally, sunglasses. My theory is that if I am wearing sunglasses, the kids will need sunglasses. Sunglasses are just as important as Sun Lotion, preventing sun damage. Yes, even eyes can be damaged by UV rays! So you are not fully prepared for an outside outing with the kids unless you have their shades!

Think of how many pairs you own. Right now I own three. (Soon to be 4, once I buy a pair at a cute sunglasses shop I found in St. Augustine!) That is a pair for me to have on my window sill, a pair in my purse and a pair in the car. To ensure my kids have glasses when THEY need them, I keep a pair for them in those same spots. And when I put on my sunglasses, I remind them to put on their sunglasses.

In fact, I just asked my 5 year old why we wear sunglasses. And he told me because you have to protect yourself from the sun. Cute, right?!

And cuter still are the children’s sunglasses styles at my go-to online sunglasses shop – EyesCreamShades.com. Do you know they recently updated their website AND their selection. They have the CUTEST pairs of sunglasses for toddlers, too small for my boys’ heads. They have great styles for boy and girl tweens. And the children’s selection is humongous. I am just waiting for some adult styles so I can match my smashin’ niece one day! *Hint*Hint*

Youngest wearing Grape Ice

The sunglasses from EyesCreamShades are in the mid-prices. They aren’t implulse-buy priced. And they aren’t mega-brand priced. They are perfectly in the middle. And you get what you pay for! Sturdy, stylish sunglasses that will last years. I think my youngest (now 4) has been wearing his Licorice and Ocean Ice for 2 – 3 years. That is AMAZING, right? No lenses have fallen out, no screws have gotten loose.

But here are my favorite Children’s Sunglasses Styles for Spring and Summer 2012:

My oldest can pull off retro colors and styles like no one’s business. His favorite pair of sunglasses was the white Vanilla Malt, which is no longer available. Bummer … except now you can reach for the Double D Blackberry. Double D sunglasses are made for boys, with thicker sides along the temples and a unique lens shape that is more “masculine”. The Blackberry color is the color of a red wine stain, very in. The lenses are polycarbonate and dark grey. The top picture is my 5 year old sporting his at the pool.

My niece wearing Deliciously Diva

I am still a fan of the original Iced Flavors style, which had translucent colored frames and more oval-ish lenses. My 4 year old usually wears blue or black, but for Spring and the upcoming summer he now has a stylish purple option – thanks to Grape Ice. The lenses on these are polycarbonate with a gradient smoke color. You can see him sporting Grape Ice above.

Finally, for the girls you can’t go wrong with either of the Divalicious or Deliciously Diva styles. They really have two different looks for them. For comparison I have my niece sporting both the Divalicious Licorice Ice and the Deliciously Diva Licorice Ice. The easiest way to separate the two styles is that Deliciously Diva has a little more Oomph while Divalicious is more celeb-classic.

For example, Divalicious has the oversized frame with the huge, circular lenses. It’s a solid frame in various colors, Black for Licorice Ice. The lens is polycarbonate, dark grey.

Deliciously Diva, the one with more oomph, has a lens that separates from the frame on the outer sides. The frames are translucent, giving them a smoky appearance. The are also more rectangular on the outer frames, but still over-sized. They have a polycarbonate smoke lens that I just LOVE.

Which one would I choose if I could only choose one … probably the Divalicious line for my niece, who is almost 7. But I have to admit that I’d probably go with the Deliciously Diva frames for tweens.

And I tried on the glasses on my adult head and they just don’t fit. So they are definitely designed for the 14 and younger crowd.

My niece wearing Divalicious Licorice Ice

Whatever style you choose, all EyesCreamShades feature the polycarbonate lenses, which are thinner, lighter and shatter resistant compared to other lenses. And they all feature 100% UVA and UVB protection against harmful ultraviolet sunlight. All of the glasses featured above are $39.95. They will last for YEARS – even when used and abused at the beach and pool!

So I started running to prep for my Zombie 5k in November. I started off by wearing my Adidas, which I thought were a running shoe. But unfortunately, I developed shin splints with them. Ouch! So I went to Dicks Sporting Goods and started trying on running shoes. The first pair I tried on, I told my husband I couldn’t see what made them special. They felt like any other sneaker I ever wore. So I kept trying on pairs, wondering why I’d pay extra for these just because they threw “running” in the name.

Finally, as a lark, I picked up a pair of more expensive running shoes and told my husband that these must feel different if they cost so much. When I put them on, it was amazing. It was wrapped securely around my foot, like a second sock. And the cushioning and bounce it provided with each step was amazing. The brand was Brooks Running and they had three different women’s styles to choose from (Pure Flow, Pure Cadence and Pure Connect), but I decided on the first style I tried on – Pure Connect. It retailed for $90.

At the store they only had the aqua/white to choose from – which is powerfully reflective for night runs. But I see online they also have tangerine/gray and raspberry/gray as options. I’d probably have gone with a different color if they had more options in the store. But since I only use my Pure Connect for running on the treadmill (so far) they haven’t gotten too dirty.

I found out that the style I chose is actually a minimalist shoe. It is meant to really give you a feel of the road as you run. Doesn’t that sound awful? Because even though there isn’t a lot of bulk to the shoe, the cushioning is amazing. Plus, there is a “seam/split” between the toe and the rest of your foot that allows for so much flexibility, that the shoe isn’t forcing your foot into a certain position as you run. Instead, you can run in a way that your foot is meant to flex and run. I can see why they do compare it to barefoot running, in a way. But unlike barefoot running, it has a lot of cushioning so your knees aren’t getting too banged up as you run. And I haven’t gotten shin splints since I put them on!

It does have a mesh upper, which I swore I’d never buy after seeing my husband tear through two pairs of shoes with a mesh upper (Reebok Brand) within a few wears. But maybe I am just easier on my shoes, because mine are still perfect, no impending or beginning tears. And the mesh upper let’s my feet “breath” during my “easy” runs. (Ha! I am sweating like a wild horse after just 2 miles!)

The only other thing of note is that I have to emphasize these are running shoes. I can do a fast walk and jog in them. But the way they flex with my feet is too bouncy and odd for day-to-day wear. Plus, I don’t want to put too many miles on them, since you do need to change running shoes after a few hundred miles. The Pure styles have a lifespan of 250 – 300 miles.

I highly suggest reading the reviews of all the Pure styles at BrooksRunning. Serious runners have even more input and may be able to help you choose the right Pure style running shoe for you. I do think I’ll try Pure Cadence in the future and maybe even Pure Connect, just to get a feel of the different shoes and make sure I am choosing the right one for me. But as a beginner runner, I think PureConnect is making my runs easy and possible!

So white and straight! And then I started drinking way too much cola. And with each pregnancy my teeth would actually shift. Within a time span of 4 years, from 28 to 32 years of age, the change in my smile became too much. My bottom teeth became crowded and my front teeth started being pushed out too much. And not just that, I could tell they were still shifting. There was no guessing on when they would stop and what they would look like in the end.

I stopped drinking cola, and since then my teeth have become so much whiter again. But that was all I could do on my own. So I made an appointment with a local orthodontist. He confirmed the obvious, that my teeth were moving. He also confirmed that this shifting could occur with pregnancy. And finally, he said that if we didn’t fix it my bite could cause future problems. I wanted Invisalign, which he does offer, but he suggested the Damon system of braces (which look like typical braces) and SureSmile (which uses a robot to shape the wire to make a more perfect smile in less time). The time frame we were looking at would be 12 – 15 months.

I agreed with his recommendation, since I wanted the best smile in the quickest time. The funny thing is, since getting braces I’ve met many adults who wish they had the courage to get it done and others who had it done as an adult and said it was the best thing they did for themselves. Yes, I have to deal with a “metal mouth” for a year. But already I was hiding my smile or trying to “work around it” for photos so that my teeth would look okay. Rather than doing that for the rest of my life, I can deal with 12 months of braces to make myself feel better about opening my mouth!

I am not saying it’s easy. The first week was HELL. Oh my goodness, it hurt so badly to bite down. Now it’s more bearable, but I can still feel the braces working. Although, after 1 month I am still not seeing much change. That’s a little disappointing knowing I have only have 11 more months to start making these teeth shift. I was hoping for more dramatic changes. And my next appointment is the end of April, so I can’t ask the orthodontist what I should be seeing -if anything – until then.

But all in all, I know that this will work. I just have to be patient that changes will not appear overnight … or over 30 nights. And by February 2013 I’ll have a fabulous, straight smile again. I’ll keep you posted on any changes over the next year, for anyone else considering braces as an adult.

Pros of Adult Braces:

Eat less! (Too painful and/or you don’t want to get food stuck in them in public!)

They make you look younger. They chopped 15 years off my age.

Gives you a sexy pout with the braces pushing out your lips.

Cons of Adult Braces:

I keep swallowing the rubber bands. Seriously.

I worry about keeping them clean when eating in public.

They are painful the first week.

It’s a 5k race (3.1 miles), with obstacles (think Tough Mudder), while you are given flags (like Flag Football) and then chased by Zombies trying to steal your health (think Resident Evil).

I mean, seriously, I was never into running. The whole Mom Buff thing is about strength training and building a shapely physique with weights. Running was BORING. But then I started thinking something with obstacles would be fun. But the thought of RUNNING between obstacles was killing me, I am not a runner. But heck, if you need motivation – not being eaten by zombies is a great one!

You can actually sign up as a runner, spectator or zombie. Zombies are either stumblers or chasers. If you sign up to be a zombie you will be given a zombie make-over that is sure to scare the runners into RUNNING FASTER. You do have to pay a fee to be a zombie, but it is less than being a runner. And zombie slots fill up faster, because there are less of them to go around.

It’s that time of year again in Florida. Allergy season. Me, my son and our friends – child and adult alike – are walking around sneezing, with red swollen eyes and popping pills to alleviate the discomfort. For my friend, the pills make her zombie-like. For me, they don’t last long enough. And neither of us really likes the idea of medicating our four year olds.

The thing is, we have to battle the allergens, not just mask the symptoms. And although we have no control over the air outdoors, we can do something about the quality of air indoors. At my house, one of our first steps was removing the carpets from the bedrooms. Carpets are a haven for dust mites and allergens that can’t be removed by simple vacuuming. We also use the Oreck Halo Vacuum, which uses a HEPA 13 filter bag. That means no more emptying a canister, re-releasing allergens who just sucked up! Finally, we use air purifiers.

My past two Air Purifiers just couldn’t take the constant use, which to me defeats their purpose. But they both burned out after a month. But now we are using the Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier. We are just testing it out, so we only have one right now. But my husband really loves it and has been moving it between our room and my son’s room to make it stand double duty. With its use he has noticed I don’t sneeze as much in the evenings and my son is not as puffy-eyed in the mornings.

Like my Halo Vacuum, the Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier uses a germ-fighting ultraviolet technology to reduce certain viruses, bacteria, fungi and mold spores. The HEPAClean® filters capture up to 99% of airborne particles such as dust, pet dander, smoke and pollen. That means I am not just decreasing household allergens, I am also reducing the chance that we spread an illness through our household.

I love that the HEPAClean® filters can be replaced OR vacuumed when the Filter Check Light indicates the filter is dirty. And it also has an enhanced odor control carbon zeolite pre-filter helps reduce common household odors from pes, cooking, nursery and smoke odors. So, this is wonderful to have in bedrooms, living rooms, sun rooms, kitchens … pretty much any room. My husband is constantly moving the Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier around the house, either to help reduce random odors from the dogs, smoke from the kitchen and … most importantly … allergens in our rooms.

Pretty much, all of the features can be turned off and on as needed. This includes oscillation, the UV light and the ionizer. You can also increase or decrease the speed of the fan, as needed. Finally, there is a timer so you shut off the Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier automatically.

The Honeywell HEPAClean® 3-in-1 Tower Air Purifier is available at Target, Amazon.com and the Honeywell Store. You can find it retailing from $201 – $269, depending on the retailer. I suggest buying one, trying it out and if you love it get a second one so you don’t have to drag it all over the house like my husband does! It really is beneficial for everyone who has allergies to have their own air purifier in their room

Whether you are dealing with the first or tenth cold sore your child has had, there are always new questions that arise. Quite often it is easier when your child is still a toddler, because they don’t deal with kids at school or look in the mirror, so they aren’t so bothered by them.

It can be scary just seeing the sore, even if it doesn’t hurt at all. Once they get a little older, they become more aware of their appearance, so being different can be frustrating. Below are 10 things that you and your child should know when it comes to the cold sore virus.

1. Resource Information

Do you know where to turn to if you need information on the virus? If your child is suddenly asking a lot of questions about their cold sore, it helps to be fully educated on the topic so you can help them to understand. With how efficient the internet is today, you can find out almost everything you need to know online.

A couple sites to check out are Web MD and Mayo Clinic. If you can get your hands on reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this can be helpful, or if you have time to visit your child’s pediatrician, they likely have brochures on the topic as well.

2. It’s Contagious

Your child needs to know that the little cold sore they are wearing on their lip is as contagious as a cold or the chicken pox. Therefore no kissing! If you have a young child, they may have their feeling hurt over this, but you can make it fun by creating a signal, secret handshake or a password that takes the place of a kiss during these times. If you have a teenager, you want to make sure they know that their significant other can catch the virus.

3. Don’t Touch

Why humans are drawn to touching a sore, blemish, etc., is one of life’s mysteries. It is as if as soon as you know there is something there, a magnetic force attracts your hand to your face. Teach your child that touching it will make it worse and can even cause it to spread into more than one.

4. Replace Toothbrush

A toothbrush must always be replaced after a cold sore goes away. Otherwise, if there are any lingering germs, they can just infect the area again. If there is a chance that your child used your toothbrush when you were not looking, you will want to replace your as well! As a rule, toothbrushes should be replaced at least every month, with or without a herpes outbreak. They should also be replaced after an illness. These are cheap hygiene tools that play a huge role in your child’s overall health, so stock up on them. Not to mention, there are dozens of things you can do with an old toothbrush!

5. Take Supplements

Get your child a high quality supplement and get the in the habit of taking it at the same time every morning so they don’t forget. Obviously, if they are young, you will be the one putting it out for them. It’s often hard to make sure your child gets all the vitamins and minerals they need every day; this will help.

6. Pick Proper Proteins

As a parent, you know how important protein is in your child’s diet, but what are you using as a source? Protein that is high in lysine can inhibit the virus but some proteins, such as nuts, contain high levels of arginine, which can wake up a dormant virus. Your child can still have a handful of nuts as a snack, but they should never be a meal, and you will want to rethink those peanut butter sandwiches. Protein that is beneficial includes pork, beef, turkey, chicken, fish, bison and wild game.

7. Eliminate Sugar

There is a good chance that you really don’t realize how much sugar your child has throughout the day. Even if you are really good about controlling the number of sugary snacks they eat, this is not enough. Sugar is in their breakfast cereal, juice, syrup they put on their pancakes, etc. Simple carbohydrates such as bread, bagels and crackers are also turned to glucose in the body, a sugar source that can trigger a herpes outbreak.

8. Reduce Stress

Does your child participate in a lot of sports or competitions, or do they feel they have to get good grades all the time? Stress forces the production of hormones which can throw their system off balance. When this happens, an outbreak can be triggered.

9. Treatment

Do you and your child know what to do as soon as symptoms arise? It is a good idea to create a cold sore remedies kit in the bathroom with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide and cotton balls or swabs, so everything is easy to find at the first sign. A child over the age of 8 can be taught how to clean the area themselves as soon as they notice redness or feel a tingle.

10. Statistics

Let your child know they are not alone. Use those valuable resources to learn how many kids their age deal with herpes, so they don’t have to feel as though they are different.

Many long-term readers know that a healthy lifestyle is important to me and my family. We exercise, eat well, and take our vitamins and supplements. I often do my shopping for supplements and vitamins at Vitamin Shoppe, although that can be overwhelming to some. A whole store dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle! Some people might not even know where to begin with supplements, with the end result they don’t even start taking some that may be beneficial.

Now designing a nutritional plan doesn’t have to be complicated, thanks to NutritionPossible.com. At NutritionPossible, you create an account and answer a few questions about your diet, lifestyle and health interests. The site will then develop a nutrition plan that will meet your unique needs.

I created my account already. It took into account my gender, age, pregnancy/breastfeeding, areas of health you are most concerned about, nutritional intake, exercise, lifestyle choices, and sleep habits. Some areas of health include energy and metabolism, muscles, joints, eyes, brain, heart, healthy appearance, bone, digestive, immunity and stress management. My primary interest was energy & metabolism, followed by muscles.

After my assessment was completed, I could see vitamins they suggested and why, foods I should eat and activities I may enjoy. It even made a list of supplements for me that I could edit, purchase immediately, print out or e-mail to myself.

COUPONS! When I was done with my assessment, I was invited to download a coupon for $10 off ProNutrients Supplement with a purchase of a Centrum Multivitamin. When I created my account I was invited to download another coupon for $2 off any Centrum®, Caltrate® or Pronutrients® product.

So with NutritionPossible.com as a guide, you can easily find and build a nutrition plan! And I love how easy it is to purchase right from the site, no need to even enter a store and be bombarded by multiple shelves of supplements! And remember to print out your coupons after creating your account and finishing your assessment!

Today is Friday! Normally my day off from writing. Especially since my sons have no school today. :woot: :woot: But I already warned them that today -after I get some work done online – I am going to be cleaning. Bah! I need to tackle their rooms and the DREADED BATHROOM!

Motivation for my cleaning, besides having boys and dogs, is that I recently read that 100% of homes have mold. Eww! And most cleaners only tackle the visible dirt, not the mold. When I think of mold – I normally think bathroom. You know, if water isn’t dried fast enough between tiles then mold will grow and stain the area. But mold can be found in damp areas AROUND the house. This includes window sills, refrigerator seals, under the kitchen sink, air registers, entryways and so on. And mold is not just unsightly, it can also cause health problems (depending on the type of mold) and allergies (when mold spores are released). Both me and my youngest have allergies, so we really don’t want mold to grow in our house!

So if most cleaners are just cleaning dirt, how do you really kill mold? In the past, I’ve tried these techniques:

1. Diluted bleach and a rag and start scrubbing those pesky areas

2. Comet cleaning powder, some water and a toothbrush – and start scrubbing.

3. Bathroom cleaning agents – and scrubbing.

4. UV-C Technology that kills molds. I have an Oreck Halo Vacuum that I love! But you can also use the Oreck Halo Flash which is more manueverable for tighter, higher spots in your house.

To prevent mold, you really just don’t want moisture sitting too long to let it grow. Remember, it grows in those areas, by windows, the fridge, bathroom, because they stay moist and at room temperature. If you want to prevent mold, then increase air circulation and ventilation in those areas with fans and windows, which will decrease the humidity. And also, don’t give it time to grow – clean regularly in those areas.

Need inspiration to clean? Check out this hilarious video!
