So, summer officially ended for us 1 week ago. We spent a lot of our vacation at the beach near Daytona. While there we celebrated my husband’s 32nd birthday – and I got him surfing lessons. And my youngest son was in awe – wanting to emulate his daddy and”surf” the shore on the boogie board. So here are some pictures of my husband riding the waves and my boys playing in the sand and shore.

And if you are looking for a gift idea for a guy in your life – and live close enough to the beach – I definitely suggest surfing lessons. My husband said it was the coolest birthday gift he’s gotten in years. (What does that say about the past few gifts I’ve given him, right? LOL!)

There are still some beach days left in summer! You know how every year I post Summer-Must Haves for your Beach Tote. Well, I just have to add one more – the Toweligator Beach Clamps.

Toweligators are bendable clamps shaped like Alligators. You twist their tails to attach them to an object and then open their mouth and they will:

Hold your towel to your beach chair

Hold your cell phone or iPod out of the sand

Clip a Blanket or Binkie to a Stroller

Hold a towel to dry

And those are just the ideas I had! Right now, both my Toweligators are holding the boys towels in the bathroom. Their towel rack fell down and I never replaced it. Plus, my husband always throws towels to dry on the shower curtain rack – even when we have a towel rack – so this works perfect for him.

They come in 4 fun colors – blue, green, yellow and purple. I want all the colors and wish they sold mismatched packs. Two Towelgators come in a pack for $14.95. Right now if you buy 2 or more packs, you can get them for $9.95 a pack. They are also offering FREE SHIPPING at Toweligator.com.

Toweligators would make fun stocking stuffers, so why not buy one for every member of the family. It’s GREAT for beach lovers, pool owners and boaters. Learn more at Toweligators.com.

Those two super heroes are protected as they play in their Superman UV 1-Piece Suit. Not just from cryptonite – but dangerous UV rays. Their one-piece sun-smart suits are around elbow length, have a comfortable collar and the length goes around mid-calve. That means I only have to have them stand still long enough for me to apply sunscreen to their faces and ears, arms and hands, and calves and feet. That makes me feel like a super mom, when I am not only saving my children from skin-damaging rays, but saving myself money from having to use a whole can of expensive sunscreen to keep them covered all day as they play at the playground, at the beach or in the pool.

The Superman UV Play and Swim Suit my boys were wearing came with a small towel cape, more for looks than drying capability. I love the added touch, but the real power is in the durability, stretch and style of the 1-piece suit. It comes in a huge range of sizes, so every boy in the family can have one. Sizing starts at size 0 to size 8 and it retails for $39. There is also a 2-piece Superman Swimwear option, long sleeve rash guard and short sleeve rash guard. You can see all Superman Sunwear Options here: Superman UV Children’s Wear

You can google swim shirts, but how do you find the right brand or style. My kids are almost 4 and 5 and my preference right now are the 1-piece suits. They also have board shorts that I pair with a UV shirt. But I just think they look super cute and cool in the one-piece suits, like little surfers. Their vulnerable skin is not only protected from UV rays, but also from gritty sand and little ocean critters as they boogie board and play in the sand at the beach. It has a zipper in the back, with a little cover at the top to keep the zipper tab from rubbing on their neck. The suits I received were a little large, since my boys are between a size 4 and 5 – here they are wearing a 6. But they work perfectly and comfortable, stretching with their bodies and not impeding their beginning swimming style. You can see them in motion here:

Where did these super swim suits come from? SEASONS-UV.com. They have a HUGE selection of cool UV Swimwear for children, tweens and women. They go further than just a wicked-popular design. They also carry color-changing options, helping to remind mom to reapply sunscreen as the day goes on. But the kids just think it’s cool that the shirts change color or design. Prices range from the $20′s for a shirt on up. They also have complementing swim bottoms, hats and other accessories.

The Mom Buzz will be posting summer ideas to keep your kids busy, as well as her own.

Had enough of the summer heat yet? Well, My BFF has been buzzing to ME about Aquadoodle ever since her daughter received one for her birthday. So I was thrilled when theMomBuzz was surprised with the Classic Aquadoodle Mat and Doodle Buddy.

I’m telling you, if your looking for a fun, mess-free, indoor activity – grab something from the Aquadoodle line! With their products, you just add water to doodle! No batteries, no paint, and easy clean-up!

There are plenty of products to choose from, like:

Draw ‘n Doodle Mat: This set includes a large 28″ x 28″ Aquadoodle Mat and an Aquadoodle Water Pen. Color appears when the water pen touches the mat. It is a durable mat with a fun border design. You can refill the pen with water when it runs out, so no buying new ones like you have to with markers that dry out. Different quadrants of the mat turn a different color when the water pen marks on it. It is perfect for ages 2+, since there are no chemicals. You just need imagination and water… and the mat. I can easily see kids as old as 6 using it.

It’s good for my youngest, who is 3.5, because he sometimes get creative with markers. He likes to draw on walls, windows, furniture, himself, etc. But now if he tries to draw on something else – it’s just a limited amount of water that dries fast. My only regret is not getting one sooner! ($21.99)

Travel ‘n Doodle: This is an Aquadoodle set that is travel friendly. It opens to show two writing surfaces. It also comes with one water pen. It’s a great travel activity, because there is no mess. When the water image dries, it disappears, so they can keep drawing on the same surfaces. Suggested for ages 2+. ($16.99)

Doodle Wall Mat: I just saw this on the website, but Aquadoodle has a mat that can be placed on the wall. It’s reusable and removable. A great alternative to white and chalk boards. Suggested for ages 2+.

Aquadoodle Doodle Buddy: A cute little Aquadoodle item that I got to see in person was the Aquadoodle Buddy. There are three variations – a bear, dog and penguin. It comes with a water pen that fits in his paw with a thick plastic for safekeeping. To play, just fill the pen with water and draw on his face and tummy. You can add glasses, bows, hearts, a mustache, stars – however you are inspired. And once it dries he goes back to his original state. Just like other Aquadoodle products, it’s suggested for ages 2+. Its an adorable gift idea.

My only suggestion it to get an Aquadoodle Accessory kit, especially for the mat. Most of the Aquadoodle products come with only one pen. But the Accessory kit will come with an additional water pen along with other “magic” drawing tools. I am planning a trip to my local Toys R Us to pick one up, that way both boys can play on the Aquadoodle Mat at the same time. I see Aquadoodle products all the time at Toys R Us, so I am pretty sure I’ll find what I am looking for easily. You can also find Aquadoodle at Target and Amazon (of course)!

The Mom Buzz will be posting summer ideas to keep your kids busy, as well as her own.

One way I love to keep the kids busy during summer is with books and activity workbooks. For workbooks I get wipe-off books that work with dry-erase markers, sticker books, and good-ol’ activity books that emphasize reading, writing and comprehension skills. And my boys love books that teach about the world around them in a way they can understand. Well, right now one of my favorite children book publishers (Silver Dolphin Books) has released some new titles that are sure to amaze you and your kids. And below I am sharing the buzz on my favorite book and workbook to keep your kids learning in a fun way this summer.

FUN ACTIVITY BOOK (For Ages 3 – 5)

The Let’s Get Ready activity book helps improve handwriting, counting 1 to 10, matching and sequencing. What makes it fun for kids are the activities, which include mazes, puzzles and fun sticker activities. It includes 320 stickers to complete the sticker activities, where they might have your child use a sticker to complete a pattern, number sequence or some other task. Stickers make everything more fun! And at the back of the book there is a wipe-clean book with two animal faces that you can decorate with dry-erase markers (not included). The only “con” is that the pages are not perforated. I like to tear out pages from perforated activity books, that way the kids can easily share. And it also helps me keep track of which pages are “used” and which pages are still usable.

Both my boys loved the book. They were entertained as it was to trace spikes on a dinosaur, connect the dots for a dolphin or finish a maze through a sheep. But the stickers made it extra fun to complete other activities, really encouraging them to take on more complicated tasks of sequencing or distinguishing between greater than and less than.

Overall, it offers approximately 200 pages of learning fun that will help keep their minds active during summer, preparing my 5 year old for Kindergarten and giving my 3 year old the skills he needs to be ahead of the class for Pre-K. The book retails for $12.95 and you can find it at this Silver Dolphin Link: Let’s Get Ready Workbook

Way Cool Book (For Ages 5 – 12)

A way cool series of books that Silver Dolphin Books released was the Amazing X-Rays series. The series includes Amazing X-Rays: Wild Animals, Amazing X-Rays: The Human Body and Amazing X-Rays: Pets. The book is not just pictures of X-rays, it actually has a built-in light box and includes 16 real x-rays in an envelope that is attached to the book for safe-keeping.

With a press of the button the light box turns on and your kids can practice reading the x-rays of pets they can find in houses across the world. The animals featured in this hard cover book include chameleons, boa constrictors, dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, horses, turtles, chinchillas, goldfish, hedgehogs, bearded dragons, parrots, rabbits and guinea pigs. With each 2-page spread you get a closer look at the x-ray and what you are seeing (ribs, backbones, growth plates, muscles, beaks and different bones. You also learn the stats of the animals, their biology and fun facts.

The book retails for $19.95. You can see go direct to Silver Dolphin’s Web Site to purchase it here: Amazing X-Rays: Pets

There are other fun series and books for kids to read this summer, from babies to teens. With Silver Dolphin Books helping to make reading and learning fun, they may even go back to school knowing more than the teacher!

The Mom Buzz will be posting summer ideas to keep your kids busy, as well as her own.

Summer has been busy this year! Swim lessons, beach trip, play dates with friends and plenty of activities at home have been keeping me and the kids away from the television/computer and instead keeping our bodies and minds active. Don’t know where to get started with some at-home ideas? Well, when the idea is neatly packaged in a box with the necesary materials and instructions, it can be easy! Here are three at-home Scientific Explorer kits that the whole family can enjoy.

1. The Meteor Rocket: You supply the Baking Soda and Vinegar (and tape and glue), but the box holds the rest of the items to build a plastic bottle rocket that can fly up to 100 feet. The rocket helps teach children about chemical reactions, similar to the volcano we did earlier this summer. The kit contains 1 plastic bottle, 3 pieces of blasa wood for the fins, 1 instruction booklet, a fin template, precut tubing, a nose cone, weather stripping, red plastic film, silver duralar, fueling module and a fin holder. Items you will need to complete the rocket include tape, plastic glue, scissors, vinegar and baking soda. It’s recommended for ages 9+, but with parent supervision younger kids (and dad) will get a huge kick out of it.

2. Ice Cream Kit: A super cool project for a hot summer is to teach kids how to make their own icecream. My 5-year old is already a pro at this, making it with his class last year. But now I have the instructions, as well, and with my kid’s help we can make a variety of textures, sweetness levels and flavors with this kit getting us started. The directions look at icecream making like an experiment, and how different techniques provide different results. The kit includes cocoa powder, vanilla syrup, strawberry syrup, rainbow sprinkles, polybags, pipettes, 1 small plastic icecream dish, measuring cup, measuring spoon, stir stick and activity guide. I suggest purchasing extra flavors (cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, mint, strawberry), extra sprinkles and of course an extra dish and spoon for the icecream! You will also want to have at home sugar, milk, salt, and ice. Other suggested items are included in the direction – but those will get your started ASAP. This kit is suggested for ages 8+, but once again with parent supervision you can do this with kids as young as 2, in my opinion.

3. My First Backyard Explorer Kit: One of the most interesting kits I’ve seen was the Backyard Explorer Kit for kids ages 4 and up. It had all sorts of instructions so that kids could build a worm hotel, have a bug hunt, explore plants and trees and even make their own sun dial. It comes with a few must-have tools for every backyard explorer, including a cool 2-way viewer to magnify bugs and seed, a collecting case to contain specimens and a bug net. It also includes tweezers, string, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, chalk, crayon and the essential explorer’s guide.

Even though the kit is for ages 4 and up, I wouldn’t let my almost 4 year old loose with it in the backyard, since Florida is known for some nasty creepy crawlies. We have an adbundance of wasps, bees and red ants. (Wasps that are about 2 inches long … scary critters). But with parent supervision, it can definitely be fun. And you don’t have to limit your exploration to the backyard, take it to the beach to see what you can find there! And remember to let go any specimens when you are done!

More summer exploration kits can be found at Giddyup.com, perfect for girls and boys of any age! They make great summer activites and gift ideas! You can purchase these kits at Amazon.com or Toys R Us.

The Mom Buzz will be posting summer ideas to keep your kids busy, as well as her own.

Many residents around the world take advantage of the beaches during the summer. Luckily, I live in Florida so I have plenty of ocean to the west, east and south. My favorite destination is just north of Daytona – the pristine beaches of Ormond Beach. It’s practically a staycation for us, since my parents have a house up there that is under half a mile from the beach. Totally walking distance for us. Sometimes we go just for a weekend. Other times we spend a whole week there.

Another perk of staying at Ormond Beach is how close to St. Augustine it is. If we spend a week in Ormond, we always do a day trip somewhere in St. Augustine. Sometimes to visit Castillo de San Marcos – my husband’s favorite destination. We also have been to Potter’s Wax Museum. (Overall, worth visiting once. It’s very small and you walk through it in minutes. But the beginning wax figures are amazing.) Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum is awesome. I’ve been to it several times with my husband and boys and the treasures inside are amazing. And another favorite stop is the Gator Farm and Zoological Park. And don’t even get me started on Luli’s cupcakes. Absolute yummy specialty cupcakes!

But the beach offers hours of enjoyment. We would ride Boogie Boards, build sand castles, hunt for crabs, swim in tidal pools and more. Of course, we were always covered with sun lotion and our UV sun shirts!

Since we walked to the beach, we bought a Step2 Wagon for Two Plus at Target to make the walk easier. Normally either my husband or I would have to carry one son while pulling along our beach roller, while the other one would stroll the second son in an umbrella stroller. But our spankin’ new wagon was easy to assemble at the beach, once we borrowed a neighbor’s wrench. You can also attach seat belts to it for younger riders, but I trusted my 3 and 5 year old to sit for the ride from my parent’s house to the beach. One of the seats has a small storage area underneath, which can hold a few toys, juice boxes or snacks. There is a door to the wagon, making it easy for the boys to go in and out. And two cupholders to hold bottled water or juice boxes.

If you like the idea of a beach wagon for the kids, you can see the one we bought at the Step 2 Site – Wagon for Two Plus. On the site it retails for $69, but we paid around $60 at the store.

Now, I know that not everyone can make it out to Daytona or Ormond, like we did. But if you can get away to a lake or beach, go for it! Playing in and near water makes a summer vacation complete! Where do you go for some water fun during the summer?

The Mom Buzz will be posting summer ideas to keep your kids busy, as well as her own.

Well, I’ve been pretty busy since the end of the school year and the start of summer. Two words – Swimming Lessons.

Last year I signed the boys up for Survival Swimming Lessons. It was the best choice I could make at the time. First off, since we visit my mom’s beach house and they have a pool (gated and locked) – I needed the boys to be able to swim to the edge if they fell in without a guardian (since you never know what may happen). Second of all, last year my youngest could only do “mom & me” style lessons while my oldest would be in group lessons – and there was no way to work around the fact that I couldn’t leave my then 4-year old at the side of the pool while I was in with my youngest. So Survival Swimming it was.

Survival Swimming had it’s uses last year. But after doing YMCA-approved classes, I won’t go back. Survival Swimming was stressful for both me and them. It is limited in time, usually around 5 minutes, because the children can’t take more than that. And for their first swimming lesson, having the teacher force them in the water was a little traumatic. It results in a lot of exhausting crying. They both DID learn, but I just don’t think (in hindsight) it would have been my preferred way to have them learn if I could have found an alternative.

This year they both did group lessons with YMCA instructors who visit our community pool. When the YMCA came out, they brought the instructor, a supervisor and a lifeguard. I LOVE that they bring their own lifeguard! They have an approved curriculum, which they hand out to the parents so you can see what they will learn in the 8-class session. Eight classes can be spread out over 4 weeks, or for a more intense program, just 2 weeks.

In May I had the boys in “Pike” classes, which was for ages 3-5. It was a 30 minute class designed for beginners who need assistance with skills. There were 5 students in their class and they learned basic swimming skills combined with games and songs. A lot better than the Survival Swimming that had them sputtering and choking on water!

Now for June I put them in the intensive 2-week “Ray” program. We were lucky that they had the same teacher, for consistency. And they really love her! Ray is also for ages 3 to 5 and is a 30 minute class. It is for intermediate swimmers that can perform some skills independently as they learn various strokes. This class can be up to 6 students, but I think since we are so early in the swim season we had a “jump” on the other swimmers skill-wise – so my boys are the only ones in the class! It is practically like they have PRIVATE LESSONS for GROUP LESSON PRICES!

Here are my pros and cons between Survival Swimming and the YMCA Community Classes.

Survival Swimming Pros: Private Lessons, Quick Lessons, They Will Learn to Get to the Side of the Pool

Survival Swimming Cons: Expensive, Traumatic, Teaches Poor Swimming Habits, Private Lessons make them feel “alone”

YMCA Community Pros: Group Lessons give students more security, Learn Proper Swimming Skills, More Economical, Less Choking on Water since they aren’t forced under, More time with the teacher

YMCA Community Cons: Not 1-on-1 Lessons

Overall, I am much more pleased with the results this year. And for the price, I can sign the kids up for a third round of lessons – something I couldn’t afford to do last year! And if you have any questions about Survival Swimming and/or YMCA Group Lessons feel free to comment below!

The Cat in the Hat knows a lot about That!

One easy way to keep the kids busy this summer – and help prevent some brain drain – is by keeping them busy reading. Books can get expensive, so a trip to the bookstore every week might be out of the question. But the library is a great option, because they:

lend books for free

have “reading times” for toddlers and children

put on plays – both live and puppet

have activities for older children in middle school and highschool. There may be art, drama and even computer activities!

You should visit your local library to learn more! You can also reserve a room at your local library for free for your own library playdate!

This summer, one of the first playdates we did with my son’s friends was a Library Playdate. I had organized it with help from iVillage and PBS to promote their Summer Reading Community Challenge. When you sign up for the Summer Reading Community Challenge, you and your children can receive fun reading tips and challenges every day to keep busy and make reading fun. For example:

Day 5: HELP YOUR KID BECOME A POET: Writing helps reinforce reading skills and is an easy way to turn any time into learning time – all you need is a pen, paper and imagination. Write a poem using the letters in your child’s name. Ask your child to think of a word that starts with each letter in their name to describe themselves.

Day 16: TAKE WORDS ON THE ROAD: Turn travel time into learning time by playing games with your child when you are on the car or on the bus. Build alphabet power by finding letters on signs, license plates and anywhere as you drive around.

MY LIBRARY PLAYDATE:

I was hoping to have an author actually read to us, so I reserved a room at my local library. Unfortunately they weren’t able to make it in the end. But for our playdate we had 14 kids how up to read, perform and color. I read two of my favorite books to the kids:

Next, I handed out activity booklets and crayons so that the kids could color while the parents got to chit-chat. And finally, each child went home with 3 Martha Speaks books! And the best part – when the Library PlayDate was over, everyone could walk around the library to check out books.

Planning a Summer PlayDate at the Library is easy and fun for the kids. All you need are some reading activities, books and kids!
