Back in November I gave my oldest son earbuds that had regulating volume, to protect eardrums from damage due to sounds over 85dbs. For my youngest, though, he has trouble getting earbuds on. And I felt that headphones would work better and be safer for him. But the selection seemed slim for kids headphones with volume limit technology.

But recently I was introduced to Kidz Gear Wired Headphones, which offers “grown-up” performance for kids, with features parents can approve of. Most important was the volume limit technology, which sets the max volume at 80 – 90 db. Anything louder can cause hearing loss. The headphones are designed for smaller heads. Plus it has padded ear covers for a comfortable fit.

Kidz Gear Wired Headphones are specifically designed to work with the Apple devices, such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Both my boys use refurbished iPhones to watch videos, play music and play games. Sometimes between them and my husband, there is a lot of competing sounds. But with headphones designed to work with their Apple devices, they can easily move through tracks with the built-in remote. And there is also an inline mic, which is great for Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App, which records my children’s voices as part of the game. If they are using your phone, the mic would allow them to talk on the phone while wearing the headphones or issue commands to Siri.

Kidz Gear Apple Wired Headphones for Kids are available now for $29.95.

I *LOVE* our XBox Kinect. I never really was into XBox games until Santa brought this to our house last year. Anything that gets the family jumping and moving usually means loads of laughs and lots of fun.

At first, I thought Twister Mania for XBox Kinect was going to do something old-school, with a virtual mat and players would have reached for colored circles. Boy, was I delightfully wrong!

This is a family-friend party game. There can be up to 8 players. You can play individually or in teams. When you play you are given a color to let you know when it’s your turn. It also takes your photo and places you in a colored circle to help you remember your color. The game will flash your color and picture when it’s your turn, since you don’t go in the same order every time. That makes sense, since otherwise player #1 would be at a disadvantage since they’ll always be thrown at a challenge without knowing what it entails while other players would be able to learn from their mistakes. Having the game decide who goes first and it being different every time is fair.

We played Party Mode. In that mode you get to spin the virtual spinner. You hold your hand up and then push down. It will spin around and land on a random challenge. There are 4 different challenges. But each challenge can present itself in a different way, so there are plenty of new ways to play. Btu you have to unlock some of these new modes of play. The four challenge types were:

Shape Frenzy: I loved this one. Letters, shapes and silhouettes appear on the screen and you have to contort your body to mimic and fill in the shape. You will see your body on the screen as you try to fill in the space. You are also trying to win stars as you do this.

Break It Down: This one has shapes stacked high on the screen. You are trying to fit into an individual shape to make it break and bring down the rest of the shapes. So you keep filling a shape with your body and letting it break. I liked this challenge too.

Twist & Fit: Players are faced with walls which have shapes and figures cut out from it. You are trying to fit through these spaces, without knocking down any parts of the wall. Okay, this is my FAVORITE challenge. SO FUN!

Spot On: This challenge is HILARIOUS. But adults versus kids is just not fair. See, what happens is one person strikes a pose and then the other players have to mimic the pose. But the shorties, including me, could never match my tall, gigantic husbands poses! And he was throwing some difficult ones out there! But if everyone is the same size (all adults or all kids) this would be more fair. That said, it caused a lot of laughter as we tried to give my husband the disadvantage when he played. It never worked though, he slam dunked this challenge.

The games described above were all the “classic” versions which you can play in all modes. But there are variations of each which will have you race, work together, place time limits and change up the rules just enough to keep interesting. There are 16 ways to play in all, with thousands of shapes to challenge you.

We’ve so far done the Beginner Level, since we were playing with our 4 and 5 year old sons. There is also an Intermediate and Advanced difficulty level. And you can choose how long your round should last – short, medium or long. You can see some video clips from us playing below. You can only imagine what the screen was showing us, as we contort and jump around. They do screen captures as you play, which we loved seeing and laughing about.

Overall, if you are looking for a family-friendly, everyone can play, Kinect game – this one rocks. My husband is already planning on inviting friends and family over to play.

Recently theMomBuzz received a LeapFrog Story Time Pad to review. It retails for only $29.99 and is for children 2 – 4 years old. It reminded me of the LeapFrog Text & Learn from 2009, which was intended to “save the PDAs”. In this instance, I *think* the Story Time Pad is a beginner’s electronic product, not meant to compete with the LeapPad or Leapster Explorer.

The Story Time Pad can be personalized with your child’s name, likes (animal, color, food), and you have a few music and story options that you can change so that the toy remains “new” and “surprising”. You do have to connect the Story Time Pad with a USB cord to your computer and connect to LeapFrog Connect to download these customizing details.

Compared to the LeapPad:

Right now the hot item is the LeapFrog LeapPad. Compared to the LeapPad, this Story Time Pad is meant for a younger audience as an early reading tablet for kids. This is NOT a more economical version of the LeapPad. Many of the Scout plush features are built into the Story Time Pad including the personalization, songs and stories. The curriculum is not as advanced as what’s on the LeapPad, since this is meant for 2 to 4 year olds. The LeapPad, with advanced games to reflect a higher academic skill set, is meant for children 4 and up.

Pretty much, if your child is outgrowing the Plush Scout, yet is still too young for the LeapPad of Leapster Explorer – the Story Time Pad is the transition between.

My thoughts:

The Story Time Pad is nook-sized – 8.1″ x 6.1 x 1.2″. I can’t help but compare it to the LeapPad. It doesn’t have the same robust graphics or large screen, because it’s actually a transition product from the Scout line. I found the screen to be a little small for my tastes, only 2.5″ x 1.5″. The screen is not backlit for play without a light. But most toddlers won’t mind those lack of features and tech-savvy preschoolers can use the Leapster Explorer or LeapPad instead, but you’ll be paying extra for those improvements.

When you turn it on, it has options for 2 volume controls. It greets my son, since I plugged it in to my computer to download his likes and information. As he plays, it will give him ideas – like to check his e-mail or listen to music.

I was able to personalize three e-mail messages – 2 from me and 1 from his dad. But you can also do other names.

Online I was able to choose from a large selection of songs and melodies to download into his music section. He can go from song-to-song using arrow keys on the Story Time Pad.

Towards the top of the Story Time Pad are four characters. I was surprised to learn they were “buttons”. If you push them, they come onto the screen with ideas of how to play next or exclamations of how happy they are.

It has a QWERTY style keyboard so they can learn about the alphabet.

The one problem we ran into was that we were unable to download any of the stories we selected from LeapFrog Connect to the Story Time Pad. It would just never finish downloading, so I finally gave up after waiting 45 minutes. If we had more success, the stories we would have chosen would have been personalized with his likes and dislikes.

Overall:

Overall, this is “beginner tech” for children. I think your best bet is to give this to a child who is 2 and not ready for the more advanced LeapFrog HandHelds and LeapFrog e-readers (Tag and Tag Jr.). There is the well-known green and white version, as well as a pink version for girls.

At that age, they just liked to fall asleep in my arms and would wake up the minute I tried to lay them in the crib. I am sure plenty of parents can relate to that. So while I was cradling them in the middle of the night, I was often using that time to also check out forums, visit blogs or visit Twitter and Facebook. Lots of moms and dads will also do play bingo online or other easy online games.

In my opinion, online games are just one way to get the feeling you aren’t alone during those long, dark nights. And online Bingo is fun! Just like live community or church BINGO games, it’s an opportunity to socialize and win some cash. And thankfully, online bingo games are easy to play when you’re sleep deprived. (You know, they call a number and you mark it off your Bingo card.) And the big bonus of playing online is that no one cares that you are playing in your pajamas!

Have you ever played online or real-life bingo? What tips can you share for Bingo success?

Today, we have two holiday tips to help you get more out of your Roku!

Party On for the Holidays

Don’t forget that Roku is much more than access to all your favorite TV shows and movies; it can also be the inspiration and centerpiece of your holiday soiree!

Do the kids just sit around the TV during Thanksgiving get-togethers? Get them moving with casual games like Angry Birds and have a competition. While they see who can knock down the most little piggies—why not serve some pigs in a blanket? Find some great recipes and tips from the James Beard Award-winning site Chow.com, Food Network or AOL Home for the kids and grown-ups alike.

Need a little mingling music to set the mood? Music is the best way to get the party started…and to keep it going. Make the music selection a collaboration by streaming favorite Christmas music on your Roku through a Pandora station or have party guests bring a USB stick with their top hits.

Want to display favorite photos from the year for your guests to enjoy? Forget about that digital picture frame; use your Roku for a wireless slideshow of Facebook or Flickr pictures on the big screen!

No matter the guest list, Roku is a great tool to enhance your next bash!

Travel with your Roku

Roku makes it simple to carry all of your family’s entertainment with you no matter where you go for the holidays. Whether traveling to a friend’s house or a hotel, simply plug in your Roku and hook up to the Internet via Wi-Fi or through a wireless router, and presto you’re in!

You’ll never miss out on your favorite shows while away from home again or have to worry about your host’s cable package/the hotel’s limited offerings and its ridiculous movie rates! Traveling with your little Roku is easy and ensures that you’re bringing your commercial-free programming (as well as casual games to keep the kids occupied, music and news/lifestyle content to enjoy!) with you too. Next holiday destination, pack your Roku and your personalized entertainment is in the bag.

Last year, Santa brought my husband an XBox Kinect. I have to say that Santa loves it just as much as my husband does. It’s so much more fun in her, er, his opinion, than traditional games. That’s because you get to jump, dive and dance and your on-screen character will do the same. It let’s you enjoy new sports, try new dance moves and take part in new adventures without leaving your home. And it gets your heart pumping, which is AWESOME.

In fact, Santa whole-heartedly approves XBox Kinect games for the kids. It was just a matter of finding one that was age-appropriate for my 5 and 4 year old.

Well, there is a new game on the street – Sesame Street, that is. It’s Once Upon a Monster and can be played by up 2 players simultaneously. The children will be friendly monsters, like Elmo and Cookie Monster. And they’ll meet, interact with and be new monsters during the game play. Monster include:

Marco – A big, furry monster who’s sensitive and loveable.

GrrHoof – A massive, strong and scary looking monster with a soft heart.

Seamus – A naturally shy monster who’s uncomfortable around other monsters.

Rays – An exuberant, creative and feisty bunch of monsters and that can be more than a little bit out of control.

Ramona – A forgetful, storytelling monster who only sings her tales.

My husband is excellent at figuring out how to maneuver through Kinect’s finicky ways, since you have to maneuver your arms or jump a certain way to get characters to move correctly. Once he figures it out, he shows my oldest who in turn teaches my youngest. As they move through the storyline, they get better and better at completing the tasks and understanding the directions.

In this story, Cookie Monster and Elmo actually enter into the book Once Upon a Monster. As you turn the pages, you meet the different monsters and get to “play” different games. The game starts off slow, getting the kids used to following directions and doing movements. But then it picks up as they have to jump, run, parachute, ride a sled and more.

I definitely suggest reading the directions before you and your child start playing. You have to swoop your arms a certain way to enter a page. And it gives you directions on what movements to make to perform the different actions. For example, it too us forever to figure out how to steer Marco to avoid obstacles and catch prizes. But once we had the movement down, we were all pros at getting through that chapter. Also, sometimes you will actually have to SPEAK to the monsters.

Actions the children will perform in the story include:

Posing

Sledding

Parachuting

Dress-Up

Flying

Drumming

Making Music

Pulling things from the ground

Throwing, both two-handed and tossing

Watering

Catching Glowbugs

Petting

Running and Marching

Cleaning

Shaking

Speaking

Dancing

Finally, there are 6 Chapters in Once Upon a Monster. Chapters include:

Chapter 1: The Greatest Party There Ever Wasn’t: Help Cookie Monster and Elmo find Marco’s friends and put together the best birthday party for Marco.

Chapter 2: From Seed to Sky: Help Cookie Monster, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch and Slimey work together to clean Shelby’s garden.

Chapter 3: Seamus the Brave: Select outfits, create music and rehearse roles to help Seamus put on a play.

Chapter 4: To Have and to Hug: Help Cookie Monster and Elmo show GrrHoof how to be himself so can make friends with the playful Puffalopes.

Chapter 5: The Sound and the Furry: Help Tallulah pull together her band so they can make music together.

Chapter 6: Like a Monster in the Sky: Help create new stories with Ramona for the monsters.

Overall, this was one of the easiest games for the kids to jump in and out of as they play. (You know how kids are … can’t even stand still to play a game!) And this also allowed us grown-ups to have a turn so we could learn the moves. It was completely age-appropriate and the kids had a lot of fun. Once Upon a Monster is rated E for everyone. I suggest it for any kid that loves Elmo and Sesame Street.

Once Upon a Monster for XBox Kinect is available for approximately $49.99. You can learn more at www.onceuponamonstergame.com.

This was the same day we received Pet Pals 2. Now, if you read my Pet Pals 2 review, you know THAT was the game they both wanted to play ALL.THE.TIME. They just love taking care of virtual dogs! And since I’ve written that review, my oldest has FINALLY stopped resetting his game so he is now getting more out of it, increasing the overall value in my opinion.

Disney Pixar Pals is for the same age level as Pet Pals 2 (4 – 7 years or Pre-K to 1st), but the game intro was a “little tricky” for them. Seriously, that’s what they kept telling me when one boy was playing Pet Pals 2 and I am trying to convince the other boy to play their other new game. So while they were able to play Pet Pals 2 by themselves from the get-go, I had to sit with each of them individually to get them started on Disney Pixar Pals. That’s actually not too unusual. Some cartridge games the kids seem to play almost intuitively (ie: Mr. Pencil Saves Doodleburg), while others they need more help in grasping the concepts or the game lay out (ie: Penguins of Madagascar)

Dinsey Pixar Pals has really useful and unique concepts, compared to the other games in our library. It teaches logic, reasoning, simple machines (physics), ocean science, astronomy, recycling, forces & motion (physics), and sorting. Crazy-good, right? It does this through some of our favorite Disney Pixar characters, like Buzz & Woody, Nemo & Dory and Wall-E.

As you play you can unlock games and find puzzle pieces to build a puzzle. When you start the game you see your three choices (Toy Story, Nemo or Wall-E). To start playing the games it gives you instructions on how to unlock two doors on the screen to play. It involves “teamwork” between two characters on the screen and finding keys to unlock doors. And you have to do specific tasks to uncover the keys and then bring them to the doors. This is the past my kids got frustrated with in the beginning. But once I showed them how to do it for Toy Story, they became pros and were able to do it by themselves for the other character areas.

The additional games for each area is behind those locked doors. So there are 6 games on this cartridge in all, since each area has two doors. My kids usually choose Toy Story to start off with. This is when simple machines and physics really come in. Some of the games remind me of Angry Birds, building on skills to complete tasks. In Nemo, you are learning about Ocean Life, doing matching and sorting. In the Wall-E area, they are learning Astronomy facts.

All LeapFrog cartridge games can be found at retailers, like Target, Toys R Us, Amazon and directly on the LeapFrog site. Disney Pixar Pals is available for $24.99.

(We love it! You must get the Solar System Map is you have a Tag Reader!) And in the package we were super surprised with a cartridge game for the Leapster Explorer and/or LeapPad. (Both systems use the same cartridges). The cartridge was Pet Pals 2: Best of Friends.

My initial reaction was – “Pet Pals is more for girls. Will my boys be into this?”

In hindsight, of the two newest cartridge games we received, they are arguing over Pet Pals 2. So Pet Pals is NOT a girls game. It’s a child’s game. Both genders will probably obsess over this equally.

The reason I thought it was more of a girls game, is because their is emphasis on taking care of your dog on this game. I just thought girls would prefer that. But silly me, of course boys would love to pick their own dog (their are fun and different breeds and colors to choose from), feed it, teach it tricks, change it’s outfits, wash it and more.

You start the game the same way each time. Choose a puppy, feed it, give it water, wash it, choose an outfit and teach it tricks. Once you do all of that you can go to Puppy Town to participate in the educational games and “emotion” games. The lessons learned are empathy, numbers, responsibility, counting, addition and subtraction.

The only “con” is that my 5 year old likes erasing his game and starting from the beginning over and over and over. I obviously want him to grow with the game, so it can keep track of what he’s learning. But he likes the beginning of the game so much, he just wants to play that part over and over.

My youngest, though, will do all of the tasks in the beginning and then continue to explore Puppy Town so he can get the most out of the game. He’s playing now. He is meeting puppies now around the town, each teaching his puppy a lesson on friendship, emotions, simply math and more.

And don’t get Pet Pals 2 confused with the included Pet Pad on your LeapPad or Leapster Explorer. The included Pet Pad lets you build a variety of pets that keep you company on your handheld. You can wash and feed them in the Pet Pad and have to connect it to your computer (LeapWorld) to get additional food and soap. With the cartridge Pet Pals 2, you don’t have to connect it to the computer to play. And Pet Pals 2 is ONLY dogs (Doberman, Pug, German Shepherd, Collie, Husky, etc.).

The game is designed for ages 4 to 7, which would be Pre-K to 1st grade. My youngest is turning 4 in 2 months, so I can see giving these to a 3 or 3.5 year old.

Overall, I have to say the game is a winner with my boys. I’m very glad that we can add it to our cartridge library!

All LeapFrog cartridge games can be found at retailers, like Target, Toys R Us, Amazon and directly on the LeapFrog site. Pet Pals 2: Best of Friends is available for $24.99.

I’ve had Reading Systems in the past, and while they are cool they don’t get the same attention that their Leapsters (Original, 2, Explorer and LeapPad) get. Especially since their LeapPad and Leapster Explorer also have e-books on them that can read a page, read word-by-word and let them interact with pictures.

That said, we recently had a LeapFrog Learn, Create and Share Party where the kids got to play with the Tag Reading System and this GIANT 2-sided Board World Map. They used the Tag Reading System pen to play geography games and learn more about the people, countries and landmarks on the World Map. They were so involved! It was so cool! I wish we could have played with it more than one day, but one of the moms “won” it during the party for her son – so we had to say good-bye.

But during the party I kept telling all the moms that there are other “boards” that you can purchase for the Tag Reading System, like a Solar System Adventure Pack, which retails for just $13.99. And two weeks later I had the chance to review the Solar System Adventure Pack with the Tag Reading System for theMomBuzz.

I have to say, it’s just cool. Most little kids LOVE space. And this 2-sided board is a great way to foster and develop their interest. The board has our Solar System on one side, where they can either use the Tag pen to learn more about the different planets, comets, asteroid belts, etc. Or they can actually participate in a game, where they use the pen to answer questions. And on the back there is a “board game”, where two players can play using the Tag Pen answering questions to space-related questions. And there are all sorts of little areas that they can interact with to further their space quest!

The map is over 3 feet long and recommended for children 4 – 8. I admit, my 5 year old plays with it more than my 46 month old. My 5 year old has also learned about space in school. I love how the map will teach adults space facts they might not even know. Like they list Pluto not as a “planet”, but separately as a dwarf planet. (I watched a television special on that recently – so interesting!)

MNEMONIC FOR THE SOLAR SYSTEM:

If you are like me, you learned the solar system using the Mnemonic “My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pickles“ – which stands for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. With the removal of Pluto from a planet into a dwarf planet, my new mnemonic is “My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us … NOTHING!“

So, we’ve played with the World Map, the Solar System Map … and there is also a 2-sided US Map for the Tag Reading System which retails for $19.99. I loved the maps we played with and based on that would totally suggest any of the maps for someone who owns or is interested in purchasing the Tag Reader.

USING THE TAG READER:

Using the Tag Reader with the maps has been simple. You need to upload the content into the pen using the supplied USB cord. But once that is one, all you have to do is turn on the Tag Reader and place the tip on an image, word or icon. There is a volume control on the pen. It’s easiest for the person holding the pen to head, the way the pen is designed with the speaker facing the person holding the pen. So when my son holds the pen, I can’t hear as easily. And when I am holding the pen, I face the speaker towards him so he can hear the instructions easier as we play together.

Currently we don’t have any books in our Tag Library, other than the book the Tag Reader came with. That book is mostly a sample of other books and games that we can purchase. There was a fun Toy Story game in that sample book, where it gives a description of an alien and you are supposed to identify it out of all the aliens on the page.

On my BUY LIST

Since I need to build up my Tag Library with more than the sample book and the Solar System Map, I thought I’d share what’s on my BUY LIST for my boys (ages 46 months and 5).

OUR FAMILY FUN:

At my house, my boys LOVE board games. We started them “young” on some favorites like Yahtzee and Monopoly. We have to make those games easier to play, but they love it. Especially since we own The Nightmare Before Christmas editions.

And they love LEGO Board Games, like Monster 4. Even my 3 year old knows how to play! And there are still old favorites like Chutes & Ladders (Super Hero edition), Sorry (Star Wars edition) and Hi-Ho Cherrio. They really love Special Edition games with their favorite characters.

Most recently we received some fun Coca-Cola Family Fun Night games. My 3 year old and I opened the puzzle first, since we always love a good, new puzzle to challenge use. We found the secret to attaching this red and white, 35-piece puzzle was to work the polar bears and Coca-Cola logo first, then to do the white and finish off with the red. We were pros the FOURTH TIME we did it!
