Result When Mall Stylist Played with Flexi8s

A decade ago (oh-my-goodness, that long?) I used to always wear hair sticks. You know, they have an “oriental” flair to them and look like fancy chopsticks? You could wear your hair in a twist or bun and hold it in place with the hair sticks. I loved them and it was well known in my office that you would see me parading around in them, it was just too easy to use.

Well, one company took that idea and came up with a way cool, flexible hair barrette that you can do a lot more with than just twists and buns. The product is called a Flexi8 and when I had some women at the mall do my hair up with it, they could not stop asking questions about how they worked, the sizes they came in and the website I found them on … and these women work with hair 8 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Why is it called Flexi8? Well, because the shape of all the barrettes is a figure 8. And that figure 8 part is flexible, so you can stick the clip portion through your hair and the 8 with ease. The “clip” portion has little notches on it so it will stay in place even with a chunk of hair in it.

You can wear the Flexi8 as a barrette, to hold twists, for buns, French Twists, pony tails, updos – really the sky is the limit. To the right is what the girls at the mall did with my hair. I had some extensions put in and then they used 2 Flexi8s to make my hair seamless with the extensions. I love what they did. Just a note, they only used 2 Flexi8’s to make my hair look seamless and they were having fun with the new barrette. One Flexi8 really would have been fine.

Updo with Flexi8

At home I mostly use the large to keep my hair in a bun or the medium to wear my hair in a twist or pony tail. I love how one type of barrette can do so much, taking the place of cheap, plastic claw clips, banana clips, hair sticks and traditional clips. I think once you try these, you will be sold on the concept.

There are various sizes to choose from – you can go as small as a mini to an extra large. Almost all women over-estimate the size they need. Flexi8 sent me 5 sizes – mini, extra small, small, medium and large. The large is good for buns, the medium is good for updos and the small, extra small and mini are good for regular barrettes and clipping small amounts of hair. I have a lot of hair – thick, Puerto Rican hair. When ordering your Flexi8 – don’t be shy and choose a few sizes for the various hair-dos you are going to want to try. And be sure to check out Flexi8’s sizing videos. The size you need will depend on texture, type, length and style. But the Flexi8 will bend to accommodate a few styles.

Thin short hair will probably need a small. Kids hair will probably need extra small and mini. Shoulder length, fine hair will probably want a small or medium. Thick, wavy hair will probably need a medium or large. But once again, watch the Flexi8 sizing video.

One reader will win three Flex8 hair clips of their choice!

So the baby shower I’ve been planning FOREVER is now over. It took place just yesterday and I had been planning on incorporating more “eastery” ideas, but it was a little hard since I am pretty far away (4 hour drive) from the party.

So how do you add elements of Easter or Springtime into a baby shower? Well, I had plenty of ideas and it seems so easy! You can decorate with Easter Eggs, have a chick or rabbit baby shower cake (or chick brownie pops), have bunny themed invitations and play games like “Guess the Jellybeans in the Bottle.”

And when it comes to gift giving like Charlotte from Sex in the City – hey, she always knew the right gift – check out the selection from Baby Bunch. You can use pink, yellow or blue baby clothes bouquets to help decorate the table or give as a gift. And right now they are selling Nests with Baby Socks. Three socks, in either pink or blue, are rolled like little robin eggs. They sit a little nest that fits in the palm of my hand. And there is a little lavender scented bird sachet that sits right over the eggs. The 100% organic cotton socks are sized to fit infants 0-6 months or up to 16 lbs.

I received two of these nests to review. I gave each nest to a pregnant mom on the same day. Each organic Baby Egg Nest is perfect for gift giving, wrapped beautifully in cellophane, tied with a ribbon and bearing a bird shaped gift tag. I did open the pink nest to get a better look at the tiny eggs.

Without a doubt, this is an affordable gift for $19.95 that has a huge “cuteness” factor and will definitely be used. Not only is it a cute shower gift, but it’s nice when visiting the new baby at home or in the hospital. Here are the direct links to both the pink and blue nests.

Blue Baby Sock Nest

Pink Baby Sock Nest

Be sure to check out the entire selection at BabyBunch.com for more great baby shower gifts. They also have cupcake onesies, lollipop sets and crayon rompers. I just love the presentation as either a great baby shower gift or part of the baby shower decor.

On March 8th, Molly (the bride), her maid of honor and her four bridesmaids were all wearing complementing JustJen Bridal Hoodies and coordinating sweatpants. Molly had an all white hoodie and matching pants, perfect for the bride-to-be. The bridal party wore Just Jen hoodies in black.
You can see their cute JustJen outfits here: Jason and Molly’s Wedding (Part 2). I wish I thought of that cute idea when I was getting married 6 years ago. I do think it might be cool to get the black hoodie and sweatpants for my Figure Competition in September, though. It’s just such a chic, comfortable way to effortlessly standout from the crowd.

You know what DVD is on rotation at the Tales house right now … Pistachio from Veggie Tales! This is the fourth Veggie Tales DVD we’ve watched and I am as thrilled as always with the lessons learned, clever script and the fact that there is absolutely no fault in letting your child watch it. No mean names, no bad habits – just a great lesson packaged in a fun story that kids and adults will both love.

The complete title of this tale is Pistachio: The Little Boy That Woodn’t. It’s a lesson in listening to your parents. The premise follows the story line of Pinocchio, where an Italian toymaker is given a magical piece of Pistachio wood and created an asparagus boy. The little asparagus, named Pistachio, immediately comes to life and sees no reason why he should listen to anyone. He just wants to have fun. But when he lies and is disobedient, not only does his nose grow, but he falls into a lot of trouble where he almost toy-napped and then taken advantage of by a “fox” and “cat”.

Gelato, his “dad” and toymaker, does all he can to keep his “flock” together, since every “sheep” is equally important – remember that Veggie Tales have ties to biblical stories. When Gelato is out looking for Pistachio, though, he is eaten by a whale! So Pistachio has to own up to his own mistakes and with the help of Cricket (a caterpillar) he sets out to find Gelato and be a good, obedient little son.

Of course, there is a silly song in the middle of it all. It is a broadway style song that every office worker and/or organized parent would love, “Where Have All the Staplers Gone?“. DVD extras include a singalong, discussion guide and a fun visit to a Marionette Theater. I really enjoyed seeing all the unusual marionettes!

The story is amazing and my oldest loves it. He really likes the beginning with Bob the Tomato. I do think Bob is great with his sidekick Larry! Bob is always the informative, straight-faced one while Larry is impulsive and brings a lot of humor to the opening of the story.

Overall, this is a great, new addition to our Veggie Tales Collection. It is now available in stores for $14.99. Keep tabs on all the happening by following Veggie Tales on Facebook! Watch the trailer here:

I have to admit I had a lot of fun with this review. As Savvy Suzie said, “My inner nerd just went *squee*!” (I love that line, Suzie!) The thing is, as moms we are all queens of our households. But how often do we get to be a princess? Albeit, Princess Leia is not exactly the posh, pampered princess we know from Disneyesque films.

Still, as I was pondering Star Wars week at Disney World, I wanted to know what costume options were open to me and the kids. I figured the kids would actually be easy, since I could pick up a Jedi robe for them and they already have lightsabers. But what about me!? As I perused CostumeSupercenter.com for ideas, I was immediately drawn to the sexy Slave Leia Costume … but walking around Disney with my two boys in that just wasn’t going to happen, even though I am sure my husband would have loved it!

The Padme and Asajj Ventress costumes also caught my eye, but just as appealing was this Princess Leia Costume with the slits up the gown – easier to chase the kids. I went all around the web, trying to find reviews on the costumes but it was hard to scrounge up. All I could find was one person who said she had trouble with the Padme costume, she bought a size too big. Keeping that in mind, even though I like “lose” clothes I ordered the Princess Leia Costume true to my size. X-Small would fits most up to a size 4, small fits between 6 and 8, and medium would be for 10 or 12. For my 5′ 6″, 119 pound frame (muscle baby – all muscle) I requested the small.

Dang - I left my Blaster in my Other Gown!

When the costume arrived, my oldest was so freakin’ excited. He is almost 4 and was pointing at the costume telling me it was Princess Leia. I tried it on and it fit AWESOME. The material is light and if you wear a colored bra, you can tell just a little. The slits on the leg are sexy, but not too high to be inappropriate around kids. The material is overall comfortable and silky smooth. The bell sleeves flow well, the stitching is excellent for a “Halloween Costume” and the gown goes to my ankles. The belt is a plastic, rubbery mold that attaches around my waist with Velcro. It is good for some “light activity”, but I will probably reinforce it to wear it longer. The wig is cute, although the buns are a little uneven! My husband said he couldn’t tell, though. It has a “webbed” feel to it. It looks great in photos, but you will need to fix it just a tad if you are a perfectionist. If you have long hair, definitely try to make the Princess Leia buns yourself.

Overall, this costume is the first costume that I have for myself that I love. Every other costume was adequate for Halloween – but this one seems like it can withstand some fun at a theme park AND be used as a Halloween Costume, as well! I would really love to get some white boots to go with the costume. And a blaster gun, but not to bring to Disney, of course. But keep in mind the costume comes with the white gown, belt and wig, which is still a great deal! Depending on the day you order, you can get this costume for anywhere between $49 and $75 dollars.

Now if you are not ready to play dress-up, but your kid is, a simple idea is a Jedi Robe or Costume. They can dress like Obi Won Kenobi with a traditional Jedi pants and shirt or get a Deluxe Jedi Robe for daily play! I know if my boys had these, they would NEVER take them off.

For men, I know husbands will be drooling for the Darth Vader Collector Costume. And what’s wicked cool is that you can get the costume on sale right now! Normally it’s over $1,000, but CostumeSupercenter.com has it for $659! That’s actually a great deal. It comes with a black jumpsuit with quilted pants and sleeves, mask, and heavy duty injected molded armor pieces for the legs and shoulders cast from original Lucas Studios molds, mask and gauntlets.

One reader will win a $40 Code to use at CostumeSupercenter.com

I love simple, quick ways that let me get out of the door without spending 20 minutes or more on my hair. Ideally, I like to spend 5 minutes or less. So that means hats, headbands and other quick-solution hair accessories are must-haves in my book. That’s where a store like HairCoverings.com comes in. They sell EVERYTHING a woman might need to cover or style their hair in a flash. Hats, bandanas, scarves, hair clips, banana clips and more.

When looking through their site, I saw they sell a hat I already own and love, a brown woven cap. I actually wear it all the time. It’s one of my favorite hats, unique and stylish. HairCoverings.com sells it in both brown and black. It is a one-size-fits-all cap that completes any look. It’s comfortable, has an elastic back and is well-made. It is 50% acrylic, 50% polyester.

I am a huge fan of knit hats, though, wearing them most often to walk to the gym. So when HairCoverings.com mentioned reviewing a hat I immediately was drawn to the deep red pull-on hat. That one is a “tight fit”. It’s a great style for many people, but it wasn’t as “deep” as I like them to be. It does fit my son perfectly, though, so I let him wear it. He loves it, bringing it out on playdates. So keep that in mind, if you want a knit hat with lots of room, this might not be right for a grown woman. If you want a knit hat that is comfortable, but has a smooth, tight look – you’ll love it. I honestly think it’s a great red knit hat for tweens and kids! Just so you see how it fits my head, there is a picture of me. It does look great. I love that red color! I just personally like a little more “depth” so I can roll it a little. Just my preference!

Now, I used to be HUGE on hair sticks. They are so easy to toss in a purse and when you need to do your hair in a flash just do a quick bun or twist and stick the hair sticks in to keep your hair in place. HairCoverings.com sells both the wood hair sticks and plastic hair sticks. Both styles cost on $3.99, a lot less than you would find in a department store!

Those were my top finds at HairCoverings.com, but I am just grazing the surface of all they have to offer. Right now you can get 10% off your order with promo code WINTERIZE. Plus, shipping is always a flat rate of $4.99!

A few close friends know I am currently Star Wars obsessed. It was bound to happen raising two boys. They love anything “hero-like”. So it makes sense after being enamored with characters like Spiderman, Hulk and Ironman, they would move on to Galactic Heroes like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Won and Clone Troopers.

Already, we do “dress-up” with the boys wearing their Captain America, Hulk and Spiderman costumes. But do you know what’s coming up FAST? Star Wars Weekend at Disney World! I am so excited, that I thought it would be awesome for the whole family to get involved with costumes! We could play pretend before going, dress up for the park, reuse the costumes for pretend play after attending Star Wars Weekend and of course have them on-hand for Halloween even!

COSTUME CHOICE: So, I decided to tackle the hardest costume first – my husband. He is MASSIVE. His shoulders are beyond an extra large size, thanks to his training. Since he was willing to play along, I also wanted a costume that was way cool. Of course, he wants Darth Vader, right? And the costume he wants is over $1,000! But in my search, I found something the kids and I liked more. (Hehe – all about me and the kids!) You see, the boys watch the animated Clone Wars cartoon and there is a Clone Trooper named Commander Cody. Commander Cody was a clone marshal commander assigned to Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Clone Wars. And AnytimeCostumes.com has a Commader Cody outfit!

Commader Kevin & his son

COSTUME DESCRIPTION: I have read a lot about Star Wars costumes in general and in my past experience it is hard to tell quality from pictures. But Anytime Costumes was kind enough to send the Commander Cody costume for review in an Extra Large. Remember, my husband is actually thicker than the X-Large size (44″ – 48″). When he opened the package it came with:

Clone Trooper jumpsuit with molded foam-like pieces

Matching Clone Trooper belt – no Velcro, have to tie

Two Piece Clone trooper headpiece – made of a sturdy plastic, the back and front Velcro together

It does not come with a gun, shoes or gloves. The Clone Trooper outfit is made of a thin white and black material. On the front, the white “molded” pieces are not hard plastic, but foam. The back of the outfit is completely white fabric, no molding. This fabric gives the outfit “breathability” for hot days or outside wear – perfect for Florida. Men will want to wear a t-shirt underneath it. Like I said, since my husband is so wide, we can’t get it to close completely in the back. But when he wears a black t-shirt, it looks like part of the costume, since it matches the black accenting in the front.

The mask is two pieces – front and back- that are held together by Velcro. It actually stays on my husband really well when playing with my son! He did say there was limited visibility. Better for my son to get a jab in.

Official Helmet

MY OPINION: This costume is an official Clone Wars licensed product. I have to say… I really like it. Of all the Halloween Costumes I’ve ever seen for an adult, this is so far my favorite. You have to know, this is not the uber deluxe, straight off the film costume. No hard, protective plastic. The costumes lightweight material and flexible “foam armor” keep it cool and the person inside agile. The helmet is lightweight and my husband isn’t sweating in it. And the best part – it takes FABULOUS PHOTOS! So my final say is that Clone Commander Cody is a great, photogenic, cool, flexible option for adults.

My husband loved it too, saying he will wear it! :woot: :woot: So I know I made a great choice! And the boys are thrilled to have a Clone Trooper to play with! (Now I can give my Wonder Woman outfit a break – HAHA!)

Straight off the set Storm Trooper!

OTHER OPTIONS and THOUGHTS: AnytimeCostumes.com has a great selection of Star Wars costumes for kids and adults. I adore the Supreme Stormtroopers Costume for $999. This one would be more like the costume that you see in the movie. And if we wanted to start building my husband’s Darth Vader outfit, we could get the heavy injection molded Darth Vader Helmet with Collector’s Box. And this EWOK Costume is absolutely adorable for little toddlers! I wish it was available in preschool sizes too!

Eek! I guess being 30 is finally letting itself be known. But, it’s not too late for me to “start over” . Well, at least it is not too late for my skin! That’s because Origins gives skin a new beginning with the new Starting Over Age-erasing moisturizer. This daily hydrator utilizes high-performance plant ingredients proven to help rebuild natural collagen and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The results are in:

After 1 month
100% of panelists saw a clinically significant improvement in skin tone

After 2 months
94% saw a clinically significant improvement in the appearance of lines and wrinkles

In the spirit of starting over and sharing the good news, Origins sent me a sample of Origins Starting Over. I have to admit, I am awful about using it all the time. It’s just not part of my daily routine. But when I did use it I noticed that it went on smooth, not greasy. There was no bad tingling or redness that can be associated with other “age erasers”. And the scent was barely noticeable.

Application really is easy. You just have to apply 2 times a day, in the morning and nighttime. I remember to apply like 1/2 the time but my skin does seem more resilient. I notice it mostly when applying my eye make-up, which to me is awesome. The truth is, you should notice a positive difference after just one use.

My favorite thing about Origins Starting Over, besides more youthful skin, is that it has Mimosa. Isn’t that a champagne/ orange juice drink? And here I am applying it to my skin! It also contains argan leaf and green algae helps to rebuild collagen, repair visible lines and improve skin texture and tone.

One jar of Starting Over contains 1.7 ounces and costs $45. The jar is sturdy and glass. The top is white plastic.

Really, the most impressive thing about the product is the testimonials. You can read all about what other people think, not just the Mom Buzz, at Origins website. Here is the link direct to the Starting Over reviews: What Real People Think about Starting Over. Currently 24 out of 25 people would recommend Starting Over and it has gotten 5 stars.
